The Daewoo Kalos is a subcompact automobile built by GM Daewoo, a South Korean subsidiary of General Motors. The above name is used for the original version of this car sold in its home market, but there are also many other names under which versions of this vehicle are sold, which are listed.

The Kalos is based on the "Kalso Dream" concept previewed at Frankfurt Motor Show in 2001, and was styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro. Initial research and platform engineering work was carried out at Daewoo's (now disbanded) Worthing Technical Centre in the UK, with the bulk of the development programme being completed at Daewoo's main Technical Center at Bupyong in Korea.

Recent Changes[]

  • On December 9th, 2010, General Motors announced that the Chevrolet Aveo nameplate in North America will be replaced by the new Chevrolet Sonic nameplate in 2012 which will end the Aveo nameplate. However though, the Aveo will still continue to be called "Aveo" in other parts of the world.[1][2][3][4][5]
  • On February 25, 2010, images of the next generation Aveo leaked on the internet after a private presentation by Bob Lutz.[6] In September 08, the 5-door Aveo followed suit, well ahead of its 2010 Paris Motor Show debut.[7]
  • For 2009, the Australian counterpart, the Holden Barina receives a major facelift following in the footsteps of the Aveo.

Model generations[]

T200[]

The original Daewoo Kalos is based on a GM Daewoo platform called T200, which itself is a replacement for the T100 platform used in Daewoo Lanos. There are no other vehicles using that platform, so the vehicle itself is also referred to as T200. T200 models debuted during 2002 in South Korea, North America, Europe and most other markets, unless otherwise indicated.

T250[]

At the 2005 Shanghai Auto Show, GM Daewoo presented an updated version of the Kalos in a sedan form, designed in cooperation with PATAC. This version of the vehicle bears the internal code T250 (referring both to the platform and the only vehicle using it).

Future[]

In future it is expected that this model line will be integrated with the GM Gamma platform.

Body styles[]

  • 5-door hatchback - This body style debuted in 2002.
  • 4-door sedan - The sedan also debuted in 2002. It is also the only body style for the updated T250 as of June 2006.
  • 3-door hatchback - The 3-door hatchback was added in 2002.

Names in selected markets[]

South Korea[]

The T200 was sold as Daewoo Kalos. Daewoo started selling the T250 sedan in September 2005 as the Daewoo Gentra, replacing Kalos sedan. Kalos reportedly means "beautiful" in Greek, while "Gentra" was derived from the English word "gentleman" and "transport(ation)". The tagline in the advertising campaign introducing the Gentra in Korea was "Are you gentle?", and the campaign starred Daniel Henny.

USA & Canada[]

In USA and Canada, 5-door and 4-door models are sold as Chevrolet Aveo. The new 250 sedan debuted in January 2006 as the 2007 Chevrolet Aveo at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show. Sales will commence in North America in the summer of 2006. Additionally, the T200 is sold as Pontiac Wave (5-door and 4-door) and Suzuki Swift+ (5-door) in Canada only. The present Aveo hatchback is called Aveo5.

Latin America[]

The T200 is sold as Chevrolet Aveo in Ecuador (3-door), Venezuela (5-door and 4-door), Colombia (3-door and 4-door) and Chile (all body styles). In Mexico, the T200 is not sold, but the T250 sedan will be sold as Pontiac G3.

Western Europe[]

Until the end of 2004, the T250 was sold as Daewoo Kalos. In the beginning of 2005, the Daewoo brand was dropped by GM in favor of Chevrolet in Western Europe, so the Kalos was rebadged Chevrolet Kalos accordingly (along with the introduction of the 3-door). The new T250 sedan is to be sold as Chevrolet Aveo and replace the Kalos sedan in 2006.

Central & Eastern Europe[]

The T200 was sold as Chevrolet Aveo from the very beginning. The T250 will replace the T200 sedan in 2006, retaining the same name.

Australia & New Zealand[]

The model was not present until December 2005, when it was introduced as the new TK Holden Barina (3-door and 5-door), replacing previous XC Barina, which was an imported and rebadged European Opel Corsa. The T250 sedan joined the Barina lineup in February 2006. The Barina starts off the feature list with air conditioning, dual airbags, CD player with an MP3 decoder, power steering and power windows. In 2009, the Barina gets front side airbags and alloy wheels with ABS brakes are an option.

Other markets[]

The T200 is sold as Chevrolet Aveo in Indonesia and Philippines (5-door only), as well as South Africa and China (5-door and 4-door). The T250 sedan is sold as Chevrolet Lova in China. The T200 was absent from the Indian market, but the T250 was launched in 2006 as along with the slogan "The Indian Revolution", clearly referencing American Chevrolet's "The American Revolution".The 2008 had a facelift in which the front fascia and the rearlights are redesigned, making it look more dynamic and stylish. So far,the new design is criticized as good looking.

Assembly plants[]

Most Kalos/Aveos are assembled in the Bupyong plant in South Korea. In Ukraine, Russia and Venezuela, local versions of the Aveo are assembled from CKD. For the Chinese market, Aveos and Lovas are manufactured by Shanghai GM Dongyue.

Safety[]

The T250 Kalos has stirred up controversy in safety as independant crash testing organisations proved. When the Chevrolet Aveo sedan was tested by EuroNCAP in 2006, the car only received 2 stars. The body cell wasn't strong enough to withstand the frontal offset crashtest meaning life threatening injuries to the driver's chest would be likely in any impact. That sent shockwaves through Holden (where it's sold there as a sedan version of the Barina) and customers have turned away after realising the car's poor crashtest result. [8][9]Holden made an attempt to disprove the poor result by having the Barina retested but it made no difference. As the result, sales of the TK Barina were lower than the XC Barina (based on the Opel Corsa) which scored 4 stars by ANCAP. The new updated Barina got 4 stars when tested in 2008 mainly because of the strengthened body cell which dramatically reduced chest and knee injuries.[10]

But then, the Chevrolet Aveo took another safety blow in the roof crush test by the IIHS. The Aveo was given a "poor" rating and it has withstood forces over 3 times its weight.

Criticisms[]

In Australia, the Holden Barina is the fuel thirstiest small car with the automatic sedan using 7.8 L/100 km.

Drive journalist Bruce Newton nominated the Holden Barina as the worst car of the decade stating that the car tarnished Holden.

Chevrolet Aveo/Sonic (T300; 2012-2020)[]

Development[]

2012-chevrolet-sonic

The second generation Aveo debuted at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, using the Gamma II global subcompact platform. It had been previewed earlier in the year as the Aveo RS concept, shown in concept form with 19-inch wheels and a M32 six-speed manual transmission mated to a 1.4-liter turbocharged Ecotec engine, rated at 103 kW (138 hp).

Development of the second-generation Aveo was led by GM Korea, with Opel engineers leading platform development along with significant input from engineers from Australia's Holden and Chevrolet of the United States. The Aveo marked the debut of the Gamma II global subcompact platform. Exterior design was led by Australian designer Ondrej Koromhaz, of Holden who was on assignment to GM Korea from 2005 to 2007. Koromhaz described his goal for the Aveo as being a "four-seat motorcycle" and took design inspiration from motorcycles, notably in the Aveo's exposed headlights and motorcycle-style instrument cluster. For Chevrolet Sonic models built in the United States, the Sonic features suspension tuning by Corvette Racing engineer John Buttermore.

Marketing and production[]

Chevrolet markets the new Aveo under the Chevrolet Sonic nameplate in the Americas, Japan, Middle East, South Africa and several Southeast Asian markets. In Australia and New Zealand, it was sold as the Holden Barina until stocks ran out in early 2019. In Europe, it retained the "Aveo" name, although sales ended there in 2014 as the Chevrolet brand was discontinued in Europe.

The North American-spec Sonic is available as a 4-door sedan or five-door hatchback. It comes with a 1.8-liter inline-four producing 101 kW (135 hp) and 169 N⋅m (125 lb⋅ft) torque, or a 1.4-liter turbo inline-four producing 103 kW (138 hp) and 201 N⋅m (148 lb⋅ft) torque.[15] The 1.8-liter engine uses one of few cast-iron block with timing belt; the 1.4L turbo engine uses a timing chain to drive the camshafts.[16] The 1.8-liter inline-four is mated to a standard five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission, while the 1.4-liter turbo has a six-speed manual transmission.[17] The Sonic is, notably, the only car in its class to be assembled in America. For the 2015 model year, the US Sonic added OnStar with 4G LTE and standard built-in Wi-Fi hotspot (includes 3GB/three-month data trial), a 1.4-liter turbo engine that became standard on LTZ models, and a new exterior color, Blue Velvet.

On August 2, 2011, the Sonic had entered production at Orion Assembly, with the first cars arriving at dealerships in October.[18] The Sonic was the only subcompact car sold in North America that was built in the United States.[19]

The Sonic used a water-based "three-wet" paint process that eliminates the need for a primer bake oven; this reduced the paint shop footprint by 10%, and used 50% less energy per vehicle painted. Chevy was the first US automaker to use this process.[20]

Facelift[]

At the 2016 New York International Auto Show, Chevrolet revealed the facelift North American version of the Sonic hatchback and sedan. The facelift brought a restyled front fascia, new LED taillights and refreshed equipment. The Barina sold in Australia and New Zealand was available only with 6-speed conventional automatic, the 4-speed model being dropped, with the same 5-speed manual in the standard model.

The LTZ trim level was renamed Premier for the 2017 model year. The previous RS trim level became a standard appearance package for all Hatchback models (1LT and Premier), and included unique upholstery (cloth trim for the 1LT, and perforated leatherette trim for the Premier), red interior accents and stitching, unique 'RS' badging, and unique aluminum-alloy wheels (16" for LT and 17" for Premier). The 1LS model was now only available as a Sedan. Also for 2017, all models gained a new standard touchscreen Chevrolet MyLink infotainment system with Bluetooth, as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, as well as a standard rear backup camera integrated into the touchscreen display. 1LT and above models received SiriusXM Satellite Radio and a remote start system as standard equipment (the latter only when equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission).
