The Peugeot 206 is a supermini car that was produced by the French manufacturer Peugeot from 1998 to 2010. Even though the 206 had finished production in most markets by 2010, in Europe it was available as the 206+, with front and rear styling that resembles the Peugeot 207, until 2012, where as in South America  it continues to be offered under the 207 nameplate, and furthermore in China, both under the 207 nameplate and as the Citroën C2.

It was officially launched on 10 September 1998,[8] in hatchback form, which was followed by a coupé cabriolet (the 206 CC) in September 2000,]a station wagon (the 206 SW) in September 2001, and a sedan version (the 206 SD) in September 2005.

Its facelifted version was initially launched in South America in September 2008, and in China in November 2008, in hatchback, sedan and station wagon body styles, and known as the 207 Compact, and as the 207respectively. This version was subsequently launched in Europe in February 2009, only in hatchback form and marketed as the 206+.

In November 2006, the Chinese joint venture Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroënlaunched a derivative version of the Peugeot 206 known as the Citroën C2, but not technically related with the European-market model.

The 206 was originally launched as a hatchback with 1.1L, 1.4L, and 1.6L petrol engines and a 1.9L diesel engine, an HDi version with common rail coming later. In 1999 a 2.0L GTi capable of 210 km/h (130 mph), and in 2003 a tuned version of the GTi called the Peugeot 206 RC (GTi 180 in the UK), were added to the range. It did 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 7.4 seconds and it reached a top speed of 220 km/h (137 mph) with 177 PS (130 kW). In 2001, two more versions of the 206 were launched – the 206 CC (coupé convertible) with a folding steel roof and the 206 SW station wagon. A 4-door notchback sedan version, developed by Iran Khodro, was unveiled in late 2005, and it is available in the Iranian, North African, Chinese, Russian, Romanian, Turkish and Bulgarian markets.

Main Competitors[]

Main Competitors to the Peugeot 206 in general are vast. Being a supermini, it is put in the firing line of the Ford Fiesta, and the Citreon Saxo, probably the most popular.

Th GTi180, being a hot hatch, has a lot of "power level" Competitors, but in many peoples opinion, the 180 (Or RC in Europe), is in a league of its own.

In independent tests, the GTi has proved its own against the Civic Type R EP3. The VTEC powered Civic is a very high revving engine, with a 2.0 capacity, but it cannot shake the lesser powerful GTi180/RC. Other cars on the 206 hit list include the Focus RS among others. What the hell!!!

Hybrid Models[]

If there are hybrid versions of this vehicle manufactured, then please elaborate a little bit on it here.

Unique Attributes[]

What sets the 206 apart from other cars is its advertisement campaign. The ad is when an indian isn't proud of his own car so he crashed it and beaten it until it looked like a Peugeot 206. [1]

Criticisms[]

Please make sure to keep critiques in a third-person point of view. If using criticisms from a reputable automotive source, then please make sure to cite the quote.

Main criticisms of the Peugeot 206 stem from the move of production out of the UK, this led to a short boycott of the brand, but generally did not harm the appeal to the UK market.

Otherwise, the handling of the Gti has said to be un worthy of the badge. Upon letting off on the accelerator, there are signs of oversteer, which critics say can be used on the track, but on the road it can be dangerous to other road users.

Some have also noted the positioning of the pedals to be uncomfortably spaced.

Probably the biggest problem of all 206's, is the more and more complaints regarding electrical faults, rendering the car without power assisted brakes and power steering. One Peugeot owner remarked "ITs not our problem, yet we are left waiting with feeble excuses from the manufacturer"

Some say that Peugeot have dealt with this problem as best they can, and that they cannot to this day located the problem, dispite it being featured on TV's "Watchdog."

Generally, the 206 is perceived as a good looking, good going hot hatch, which in the Gti 180 form can keep up with the likes of the Ford Focus RS, and the Civic Type R Ep3.

Design quirks and oddities[]

English precision driver Russ Swift performed stunts in the 206 for the Melbourne Internatinal Motor Show in years 2005 and 2006. He performed 2 wheelers and handbrake parking and in 2006, Swift managed to slide in a parallel park spacewith just 12.5 cm at each end at a speed of 30 km/h.

In the What Women Want survey conducted by the RACV in 2003, the 206 is the most popular choice among women buying a Peugeot.
