Oldsmobile's first-ever van, the Silhouette, debuted in 1990 along with the Chevrolet Lumina APV and Pontiac Trans Sport. It was built at Tarrytown, New York. Seven seats were avaliable in the Silhouette. Child seats were avaliable in 1994. The first generation Silhouette lasted until 1996. The second generation Silhouette started in 1997. This time it was built in Doraville, Georgia. There were complaints about the first generation Silhouette being too large for European roads. This was changed by making the Silhouette narrower and slightly smaller. The Silhouette was more nicely outfitted than the Lumina APV and Trans Sport, but differed little externally save from some unique Oldsmobile touches. Drivetrain choices also mirrored each other. Out of the Lumina APV and Trans Sport, the Silhouette was the least popular of the trio, with sales averaging less than half of the Chevy and Pontiac.
