2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (W212)

Mercedes-Benz E-Class Lineup 1

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class Family

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is a mid-sized luxury automobile sold by the Mercedes-Benz branch of Daimler-Benz. The model line is available with various six and eight-cylinder gasoline and diesel engines. The E stood for Einspritzung, which is German for fuel injection, which was a very new feature at the time the "E" first appeared in the 1950s. The E-Class is the bestselling Mercedes-Benz model worldwide. It is famous both as luxury or executive transport, and as taxis in countries like Germany and Singapore. In Germany the E-Class is also commonly used as a police interceptor vehicle.

Recent Changes

  • For 2011, the E63 AMG receives an 11 hp bump as well as "ARTICO" interior leather upgrades. In addition, "Designo Leather II" appointments will also be offered as an option covering the lower section of the dashboard, the glove compartment lid, the door linings including map pockets and the side upholstery of the centre console in exclusive nappa leather.[1]
  • At the 2010 Beijing Motor Show, Mercedes launched the E300 L long wheelbase variant of the W212 E-Class. Adding 14 cm of rear legroom, the car is for the Chinese market only, unfortunately. [2]
  • The W212 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Wagon is due to be unveiled at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show. However, as early as August 4, 2009, images of the third addition to the E-Class range has surfaced on the internet. The new model is expected to carry its sedan sister's powertrain options while four-wheel drive 4MATIC variants will also be offered. Frankfurt also plays host to the unveiling of the W212 E63 AMG Wagon. [3][4][5]

E63 AMG Wagon

  • At the 2009 New York Auto Show, Mercedes-Benz unveiled the W212 E63 AMG. The new supersedan features an impressive arsenal in the form of AMG's tried and tested 6.2-liter V8 producing 518 horsepower and 465 lb-ft of torque for "Hammer" duty. The big news, however, is the inclusion of the SL63's AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT 7-speed dual-clutch gearbox which allows the new car to consume 12% less fuel than the previous model while delivering more brute teutonic force. [6]
  • On February 9, 2009 Mercedes-Benz announced the W212 E-Class Guard. The car is protected by special steel and polycarbonate glazing for the windows, allowing it to withstand attacks from a .44 Magnum firearm and even a DM51 hand-grenade. An optional intercom system is available. The E-class Guard comes available in three engine configurations in both Elegance and Avantgarde trim: the E350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY, the E500 and the E350. Orders begin in April 2009 with prices starting from €45,000 excluding VAT. [7]
  • As early as December 2008, images of the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class (aka Mercedes-Benz W212) have leaked on the internet.

Hybrid Models

Mercedes-E300-HYBRID-Diesel-1small

Mercedes introduced the E300 BlueTEC HYBRID at the 2010 Geneva Motor Show powered by a 2.2 litre Diesel Inline-4 developing 204 hp paired with a 20 hp (15 kW) electric motor, positioned between the engine and the gearbox, for a combined output of 224 hp and 427.8 lb-ft (580 Nm) of torque. The gearbox is Mercedes' now ubiquitous 7-speed automatic transmission. The electric motor is supplanted by a KERS-style brake energy recovery system and can power the car alone for short distances at speeds of up to 35 km/h or 22 mph while the diesel engine's toxic output is cleaned by the company's AdBlue system. The E300 BlueTEC returns 4.1 lt/ 100km (equal to 57.4 mpg US) and CO2 emissions of 109 g/km.

Generations

Current Generation: W212 (2009 - present)

See Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe for the Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class replacement

The W212 replaced the W211 in 2009. Official photos of the W212 was leaked on the internet on the 9th December, 2008 ahead of its 2009 Geneva Motor Show unveiling.[1] Scans of a leaked brochure have been posted on the internet since January 2009, detailing the whole E-Class range including the new E 200 CGI and E 230 CGI with direct injected forced inducted engines.[2]

Seventh generation W211 (2002 - 2009)

Mercedes-Benz W211

See Mercedes-Benz W211 for details

Launched in 2003, the W211 E-Class continues the line's push upmarket. The W211-based W219 CLS-Class was new for 2005. In 2002 Mercedes made a facelift for the W210 which begun the launch of the W212. The W211 E-Class will be facelifted for 2007, although a new model is less than two years off.

Mercedes-Benz introduced their Bluetec Diesel system to the E-Class at the 2006 North American International Auto Show as the E320 Bluetec. This system uses urea to clean Diesel emissions, making the E320 legal in 50 states in the United States. Sales began in autumn 2006 as a 2007 model.

The generation has been one of the most controversial models produced by Mercedes. Despite its classic and appealing visage, the model has been mired in criticisms of lackluster build quality compared to previous generations. The worst came in 2003, due to its pioneering attempt but ill-fated to introduce a market-first brake-by-wire system. The technology proved to be unfinished and unreliable. Mercedes themselves have hinted that much of this (and Mercedes-Benz's general downturn in quality in the early 2000s) has been the result of their adaptation of a new business model in the mid-90's utilizing budget constraints and timetables which was in strak contrast to their previous practice of giving their engineers free reign and as much influence and say in model development.

  • For the 2007 model year, Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the extremely rare Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG Wagon. It sports a 6.2-liter V8 built and designed by AMG, with 507 bhp @ 6800 rpm on tap and 465 lb-ft @ 5200 rpm of torque mated to Mercedes' 7-speed Automatic transmission. The car is capable of rocketting from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds with the 1/4 mile attained in 12.4 seconds. Competing directly with BMW's M5 wagon, top speed is electronically limited to 155 mph but we all know that that can be easily done away with.

Sixth generation W210 (1995 - 2002)

Mercedes-Benz W210 - 1995 to 2003small

Mercedes-Benz W210

See Mercedes-Benz W210 for details

The W210 E-Class, launched in 1996, brought the mid-size Mercedes firmly into the upper end of the luxury market. Though six-cylinder models were still offered for a time, the four-light front end and high prices moved the car upmarket. This model was very much appreciated by the market, and ripped apart the competitiors like the BMW 5 Series.

Fifth generation W124 (1985 - 1995)

Mercedes-Benz W124

See Mercedes-Benz W124 for details

The "E-Class" name first appeared in the USA with the face-lifted W124 in 1994. The earlier gasoline models of the W123 bore the "E" designator, it stood for Einspritzer (injection, petrol), and Mercedes-Benz continued with this nomenclature with the launch of the W124 in 1985 (1986 USA); in 1994 (USA) a cosmetic face-lift was given to the W124 series along with a new nomenclature of "E-Class" for the entire W124 line. The 300D continued to be the high-mileage option, but V8 engines (available after 1992) brought new-found power to the line. The V8 powered sedans were named 400E/500E from 1992-1993, and E420/E500 after 1993. Likewise, the 3-liter cars (e.g., "300E") where also re-badged to "E320" with the new 3.2 litre engines and naming rationalization of 1994. Mercedes also included a limited production sport version of the W124, created in close cooperation with Porsche. This was called the 500E, and set the standard for modern sports sedans. The W124 is argued by many to have been the last 'proper' Mercedes-Benz. Daimler Benz bought Chrysler in the 1998 "Merger of Equals". Many have said that the quality was lacking for several years following the merger, but quality is now much improved and at a high standard.

Fourth generation W123 (1977 - 1985)

The popular W123 quickly became a best-seller on its launch in 1977. Especially in Diesel 240D (and later 300D) guises, the cars enhanced the company's reputation as a purveyor of rugged and reliable cars. Over 2.3 million examples were produced through 1985.

Third generation W114/W115 "Stroke-8" (1968 - 1975)

The midsize Mercedes was redesigned in 1968 as the W114/W115 "Stroke-8". This time, the 6-cylinder models (The W114s) were most prevalent, with the W115 line making up the bottom of the company's offerings with four- and five-cylinder power. Diesel engines joined the lineup, as did a coupe body.

Second generation W110 "Fintail" (1962 - 1968)

Mercedes added tailfins to both the big S-Class and the new W110 "Fintail" 190 of 1962. Straight-6 power appeared for the first time in the 1965 230 model, and the fours grew in displacement that year as well.

First Generation/Origins W120 "Ponton" (1953 - 1962)

The first modern midsize Mercedes was the W120 "Ponton" 180 of 1953. Sharing its engineering with the R121 190SL of 1955, the Ponton was a stylish sedan with four-cylinder power. A larger-engined W121 190 appeared in 1958.

Design quirks and oddities

A silver Mercedes-Benz W124 E-Class appeared in a 1993 film Mrs Doubtfire owned by Stuart Dunmire. There was a scene when Mrs Doubtfire pulled the Mercedes ornament off and showed it to Stuart and asked which car the ornament belonged to (hiding the fact that what she'd done was deliberate). Stuart admitted that the ornament came from his Mercedes and Mrs Doubtfire made a comment stating that people who own big cars compensate for their smaller genitals.

Awards

The Mercedes-Benz E-Class was Motor Trend's Import Car of the Year for 1996. In 2002, the E-Class won Australia's Best Luxury Car Over $57,000 by the RACV.

The Merceds-Benz E-Class won 2003's Most Beautiful Prestige Sedan in the World.
