Six months after unveiling the Aventador, plans for a roadster version were leaked by the U.S. EPA after it included the model on a data sheet on its website. Lamborghini officially unveiled the Aventador J to the world at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The roofless and windowless barchetta concept car uses the same V12 engine as the standard Aventador, producing 700 PS (690 hp; 515 kW) with the same single-clutch transmission as in the standard coupé. The car does not have air conditioning or radio to save further weight for a total of 3,472 lb (1,575 kg). The car presented at the Geneva show was the only unit to be produced, and was sold for US$2.8 million. The J designation was thought to have come from Appendix J in the FIA rulebook that describes the technical specifications of race cars. However, during an interview with designer Filippo Perini, it was revealed that the 'J' actually stands for Jota, in reference to a 1970s one-off Lamborghini Miura Jota, which also conformed to the FIA's Appendix J regulations.

"It was the 14th of January that Mr Winkelmann asked us to do something for Geneva," says Filippo Perini. "A blank sheet. Do what you want. I drew up this car in a weekend..." So that's just a month and a half to bring a car from drawing board to reality: most companies would take that long to decide on the level of damping on the stereo volume knob. The timeframe is even more astonishing when you consider that the J is far more than an Aventador with the roof and windscreen lopped off. Only the front bonnet, front fender, rear fender and headlights remain from Lambo's big V12 coupe: every other panel is new. A huge winglet-covered diffuser lurks at the front, while the rear diffuser has grown too, and sprouted a quad of evil exhausts (imagine the noise). The Aventador coupe's slatted rear deck is gone, replaced by a pair of sleek humps and a delicate carbon-fibre crossbrace over the engine. And just look at that ‘periscope' rear-view mirror. Six weeks. And don't forget this is no concept: the J is road-legal, homologated in Italy (I'm not sure how the single-car homologation procedure works in Italy, but we'd imagine it goes something along the lines of, "Yeah, it's a massive red Lamborghini with no roof. Any problems? No? Great...").
The Aventador J was designed in such a manner that the exterior and the interior give the impressive of being just one unit: a red stripe runs from the front hood, between the two wind deflectors, over the dashboard, down the console to the center tunnel, and back up between the seat backs. From there, it goes out again to the engine cover panel. Lamborghini has dropped elements like the navigation system and the audio system so that the only elements remaining are a small control panel housing the starter button and the switches for lights and transmission. The seats and the cockpit are made from a carbon fiber fabric called "Carbonskin" - an element made of woven carbon fibers soaked with a very special epoxy resin that stabilizes the fiber structure and keeps the material soft. All of these features, or lack thereof, contribute to the speed of the Aventador J.
