The V50 is a compact luxury station wagon based on the Volvo P1 platform shared with the Volvo S40, Mazda Mazda3, and the new European Ford Focus. Ford Motor Company's Premier Automotive Group assembles the V50 at the Volvo Cars factory in Ghent, Belgium. Volvo Cars Special Vehicle also produced a concept car based on the V50, the V50 SV, whose engine produces 340 horsepower (179 kW), and debuted at the 2004 Specialty Equipment Manufacturers Association tradeshow in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Highlights of the V50's interior design include soft "theatre" lighting of various sections, and a translucent "iced aqua" center stack. In safety, the V50 features "Volvo Intelligent Vehicle Architecture".

The top-of-the line V50 is the T5 AWD. This model features all-wheel-drive and a five-cylinder, 2.5 L petrol-powered engine with a light-pressure turbocharger. Its valvetrain has four valves per cylinder and is a DOHC design with variable camshaft timing. The engine provides 220bhp and 320Nm of torque. The T5 AWD and T5 both provide increased horsepower, in fact, but the base trim 2.4i makes up in a smoother ride what it lacks in power because of the wheels and suspension that come standard with the 2.4i (more horsepower usually means stiffer suspension.)

Recent Changes[]

  • Volvo unveiled its ultra-efficient diesel 2009 DRIVe range at the 2008 Paris Motor Show. Among the cars involved are the C30, S40 and the V50. Each car will be powered by a 1.6 litre turbodiesel inline-4 attached to a 5-speed manual with longer gear ratios in 3rd, 4th and 5th to maximize efficiency. Besides the powertrain, Volvo also paid special attention to each car's aerodynamics in its pursuit of "green-ness". So all cars now sit 10 mm lower, the radiators have been covered to eliminate air turbulence, the wheels sport a unique alloy design fitted with Michelin's low rolling resistance rubber, the S40 and V50 is fitted with the T5's front spoiler while the C30 gets a redesigned rear bumper complemented by a diffuser and a new hatch-mounted spoiler. All of this effort means an EU combined cycle rating of 76 mpg and a CO2 emmision of 120 g/km. The entire package will be available for €150 to €450. [1]

Reliability[]

  • RECALL ALERT: On February 2008, Volvo announced a recall entailing 82,000 S40 and V50s equipped with the 5-cylinder petrol engine built between 2004 and 2006. The issue stems from fuel pump electronics being exposed to rain, snow and road salt leading to their degradation. If excessive rust occurs it can lead to fuel starvation of the engine and thus, engine stalling. Vehicles from cold weather climates will receive the repairs while vehicles found in warmer countries will get an extended warranty instead. [2]
  • RECALL ALERT: On Jul 29, 2008, Volvo issued a recall affecting 1020 C1 platform Volvos: C30, S40, V50, and C70 due to a faulty power steering return line which may rupture and cause the loss of power steering.[3]
