Engine and Transmission[]

In the Indian auto market, Skoda Superb is available with three different capacity engines that delivers different level of power and performance.

Skoda Superb 1.8 TSI, 4V, 1798cc petrol engine employs three innovative technology to outshine engines of larger size. It employs Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection (TSI) technology with turbo-charging and variable valve timing. Its Seven Speed Automatic DSG available with TSI petrol engine has introduced a seventh gear for maximum exploitation of the engines output. Tiptronic function allows operation of DSG like sequential manual transmission. Gearshift controls are also present on the steering wheel for more confidence in driving. Power delivered is 160bhp and Torque is 25KGM.

Skoda Superb 2.0 TDI PD, 4V, 1968cc diesel engine comes with a TDI PD technology in which the high pressure of PD engine and the integration of injector and pump improves combustion of fuel as it is pumped instantly without any delay of time and loss of pressure. This improves engines response to throttle inputs thus acceleration is stronger and quicker. Transmission in Skoda is by two new automatic gearboxes with the DSG (Direct Shift Gearbox) technology. Its Six Speed Automatic DSG that comes with TDI PD diesel engine, is faster than manual gearshift, reduces the jolt, reduces the level of noise during gear change and makes gearshift smooth. Power delivered is Power delivered is 140 bhp and Torque is 32.0KGM.

Skoda Superb 3.6 FSI petrol engine features variable valve timing and Turbocharged Fuel Stratified Injection (TSI) technology which brings it at par with V6 engine. This is also because it has Six Speed Automatic DSG transmission along with Four-wheel drive, present only in this variant. 4X4 drive inspires superior driving experience giving better road grip, responds quickly to driver’s inputs and restores balance. The economical performance is improved as on-demand systems only transmits power to each wheel based on its individual behavior. As per the details available at Skoda Superb

First Generation/Origins (2002–2007)[]

The Superb is available with several petrol and diesel engines. The base model, the Classic, is available with a 1.9 L TDI turbodiesel rated at 74 kW, or a 2.0 L I4 engine rated at 85 kW. The Comfort and Elegance models are offered with a with either a 142 kW V6 2.8 L petrol engine, or a 2.5 L TDI rated at 120 kW. Transmissions available are a six-speed manual or five-speed tiptronic. As well as offering Volkswagen's older 1.9 L PD engine, the Superb also uses the new 100 kW 2.0 L TDIs found in other cars of the Volkswagen Group.

The Superb was facelifted in 2006 to incorporate Skoda's new grille, headlights and tail lights. A Laurin and Klement model became the top of the range, deposing the Elegance model from that position. A range of new engines was introduced and the interior featured real wood as part of some trim levels. Akin to the Rolls-Royce Phantom some higher spec models even have an umbrella secreted in the rear door panel.

Although the Passat upon which it is based competes with the likes of the Ford Mondeo and Peugeot 407, the Superb is marketed as an alternative to the more prestigious likes of the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, though it is actually cheaper than the Passat.

The superb’s 2.8 liter v6 engine displaces more than both the e and c class, but manages to be more efficient than the e class. In the city it returns only 7 km/l, while on the highway it returns 9 km/l. In mixed conditions it can manage a little more than 7 km/l which makes it a quite thirsty.[2]

The Superb got minor facelift in August 2006 - a new radiator grille, additional blinkers have been integrated into the vehicle's wing mirrors, the tail lights were C-shaped in style of Roomster and Octavia and interior was redesigned.[3]

Worldwide[]

  • When the Superb was released in Great Britain, the most expensive variant was priced at only £ 1000 more than the cheapest Jaguar X-Type.
  • Škoda considered an estate version of the Superb, but never proceeded to production.
  • The Superb is Škoda's slowest selling model.
  • The Superb is used as a luxury taxi in certain countries, eg: Singapore.

In Australia, there are two model varients called the Ambition and the Elegance. The Amibtion gets stability control, dual-zone air condtioning, 6 disc CD sound system with a touch screen and SD memory card, tyre pressure moniters, cruise control, rear parking sensors self retracting wing mirrors and foglights with a choice of a 1.8 litre TSI or 2.0 litre diesel engine. The Elegance carries the same engines with the addition of a 3.6 litre V6 and adaptive bi-xenon headlights, an alarm, electric driver's seat, adjustable headlights (see Safety), and a upgraded 10 speaker sound system. Options include a self-parking system ($890) and a solar powerd sunroof ($2290).

Ambition 1.8 TSI: $42,990 AUD

Ambition 2.0 TDI: $45,990 AUD

Elegance 1.8 TSI: $45,990 AUD

Elegance 2.0 TDI: $47,990 AUD
