American tuner and boutique automaker Saleen, the producer of the prodigiously powerful and prodigiously expensive S7 and S7 Twin Turbo, used the New York auto show to debut its supercar concept, the S5S Raptor. Saleen says the S5S Raptor concept is “designed for the premium performance market” and that a production version would be comparable in price and size to a Ferrari F430. Saleen estimates an asking price of $185,000 (well down from the S7 Twin Turbo’s base price of nearly $600,000), and the S5S Raptor has an overall length of 175.0 inches and a wheelbase of 106.3 inches. For reference, the Ferrari is 2.6 inches longer and rides on a wheelbase that’s shorter by nearly four inches. The S5S is 46.0 inches high and 78.6 wide, 1.8 inches lower and 2.9 inches wider than Maranello’s finest. S5S stands for “Saleen 5.0-liter supercharged,” so the Raptor is logically powered by an E85-burning 650-hp, 5.0-liter supercharged V-8 that also twists out 630 pound-feet of torque. No fancy-pants DOHC engine, the all-aluminum, three-valve single-overhead-cammer spits out peak horsepower at 6300 rpm, with max torque on tap from 4400. All that power boogies through a standard six-speed manual—a six-speed paddle-shift sequential manual could be available as well—on its way to 20-inch wheels and tires. Rubber measures 275/35 at the front and 315/35 at the rear. The front brakes consist of 15-inch rotors squeezed by six-piston calipers; 13-inch discs and two-piston grabbers handle stopping duties out back. The curb weight theoretically stands at just under 3400 pounds, with 44 percent of the tonnage allotted to the front axle.

These 'lessons learned' are evident in the Raptor concept and we will continue to build upon them as the company evolves." The aesthetics for the Raptor were developed by ASC Creative Services, America's largest independent automotive design firm. "This vehicle was an aggressively compressed program that combined the traditional methods of three-dimensional clay sculpting with sophisticated digital modeling tools," said Steve Nowicki, ASC Creative Services Director. "The vehicle is distinctive in a way that I think the world is going to love. The primary designer on this program was Dave Byron, a CCS graduate and passionate member of ASC's Design team".
