The Lotus Evora was a sports car produced by British car manufacturer Lotus. The car, which was developed under the project name Project Eagle, was launched on 22 July 2008 at the British International Motor Show. The Evora S was launched in 2010 with a supercharged 3.5-litre V6. A facelifted and more powerful Evora 400 model was unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, followed by another more powerful variant, the Evora GT430, which was unveiled in 2017.

The Lotus Evora is based on the first all-new vehicle platform from Lotus Cars since the introduction of the Lotus Elise in 1995 (the Exige and the 2006 Europa S are both derivatives of the Elise). The Evora was planned to be the first of three vehicles to be built on the same platform. The sales target was 2,000 cars per year, with prices between £45,000 and just over £50,000, and sales in America scheduled from the beginning of 2010.

Recent Changes[]

  • The 2010 Paris Motor Show hosted the world debut of two new Evora variants. The first is the hotted-up Evora S. The S slaps a supercharger on top of the Camry-sourced 3.5 litre V6 and now produces 350 hp. Other features include a standard sport package (with a sport button that adjusts throttle response and engages the exhaust's bypass valve), and a rear diffuser with a wide-mouth center-exhaust outlet. There's also a heads-up display and cross-drilled rotors. The second Evora to come out in Paris is the Evora IPS (Intelligent Precision Shift), which is a regular Evora but switches the Manual for an Automatic.[1]
  • Lotus recently announced that in 2011, they will unveil the Evora SC, a supercharged version of the standard car which will increase horsepower output from 276 to 350. That should be enough to increase top speed from 160 to 175 mph. In between now until then Lotus will also introduce an Automatic transmission (the first time Lotus has done so in recent memory) as well as a roadster version. Some sources claim that it will be a retractable hardtop. [2]

Styles and Major Options[]

To address the worldwide appeal of the car, it has been reported that a convertible version is highly plausible, and the car will be available in either 2+2 or 2-seater form.

Engine and Transmission[]

The engine itself is a 2GR-FE 3.5-litre V6 DOHC with intelligent variable valve timing. Maximum horsepower (276 bhp) is available at 6400 rpm, and maximum torque (252 lb ft) is available at 4700 rpm respectively.

The Evora utilises a 6-speed manual gearbox which is also Toyota-sourced. Lotus will also offer a close-ratio version of this gearbox in the future.

Performance[]

Little information regarding performance was released by Lotus upon launch other than torque and horsepower figures. In it's press release, Lotus claimed a top speed of 160 mph and a 0-60 mph time of under 5 seconds. The best time they did was a 4.5 second 0-60 mph.

Hybrid Models[]

  • Lotus has announced that the 2010 Geneva Motor Show will host the unveiling of the Evora 414E Hybrid. The car will be powered by a pair of rear-mounted electric motors and a 1.2 litre Petrol Inline-3. The system, similar to the Chevrolet Volt and the Fisker Karma utilizes the twin electric powerplants as its source of motivation, with the 47 hp internal combustion engine only coming to life to recharge the 17 kilowatt-hour lithium polymer batteries once they run low on juice. Output is rated at 408 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque available instantly at no revs at all. All in all, the car will have a 35 mile all-electric range and a 300 mile range running the gas engine.

Unique Attributes[]

If there are any features of this vehicle that sets it apart from other vehicles in its class, then mention those unique attributes here.

Interior[]

010 evoralotus

The interior of the Evora is limited in space as it's a 2-door sports car, the frunk serves as the only place that can store items until a Luggage shelf was added to the facelifted model. The dials are unique, although the red LCD trip readout is relatively 'old' by critic standards, the aluminium switches are prone to be obscured and, in sunlight, it’s subject to all kinds of reflections as do many cars. There are a few other quirks, too. It’s damnably hard to adjust the seat backrest angle with the door closed as many sportscas suffer from this. The only cupholder is, in effect, the door pocket. The driving position is offset, and although the steering wheel adjusts amply so it's sins are forgiven, there are harsh edges around the wheel to improve grip on the wheel.

As for standard interior equipment, the Evora 400 gets the 2+2 seating arrangement as standard, with isofix mountings on the rear seats, air conditioning, heated front seats, rear parking sensors, a reversing camera and premium carpet. There is also Lotus's infotainment system which comes complete with sat nav, Bluetooth and DAB radio included. Options for the Evora include cruise control, turning the 400 into a two-seater, a subwoofer and amp, a lithium-ion battery pack and electrically adjustable front seats.

Evora S[]

Lotus-evora-s-1-front-tracking

In 2010, Lotus unveiled a high-performance variant of the Evora called the Evora S. The "S" in the name stands for "supercharged," but the engine is not intercooled. The car has the same standard design but is more powerful, now rated at 345 hp (257 kW; 350 PS) and 295 lb⋅ft (400 N⋅m) of torque powered by a new supercharger manufactured by Harrop.[15] The car's exhaust was also replaced with a single-tubed exhaust system. The suspension's dampers were recalibrated to suit the vehicle's new suspension characteristics, and the steering also received recalibration.

The car was able to accelerate from 0-60 mph (97 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, with a top speed of 172 mph (277 km/h). Lotus ceased production of the S in 2014 and later replaced it and the standard Evora with a new variant called the Evora 400 in 2015.

Evora 400[]

Lotus-evora-gt-vivid-green-14

The Evora 400 is a new variant that replaces the Evora and the Evora S.[17] The "400" in the name is a reference to the vehicle's horsepower rating. The improved engine output of 400 hp (298 kW; 406 PS) and 302 lb⋅ft (409 N⋅m) of torque is made possible by an intercooled supercharger developed by Edelbrock. The Evora 400 has an all-new body kit design, which helps produce an extra 23 kg (51 lb) of downforce. The exhaust has a new driver-activated system that allows the driver to increase the roar of the exhaust. The interior was slightly revised, notably with narrower sills for simplified entry and exit, a new dashboard design and a new centre-console design. The wheel set was also different, with forged wheels as a new option. The wing was changed to a split rear wing. The car has a total weight of 1,395 kg (3,075 lb).

Acceleration from 0+60 mph (97 km/h) is at 4.1 seconds, 0.5 seconds faster than that of the S variant. The 400 can attain a top speed of 186 mph (299 km/h).

Evora GT (North America Only)[]

In June 2019, for the 2020 model year, Lotus introduced the Evora GT for the North American market only. This car uses the same supercharged 3.5-liter V6 like the rest of the lineup but is rated at 416 hp (310 kW; 422 PS) and 317 lb⋅ft (430 N⋅m) for the manual and 332 lb⋅ft (450 N⋅m) for the automatic. Cars with the manual transmission feature a standard Torsen rear differential. Regardless of transmission choice, the 0-60 mph (97 km/h) acceleration time is estimated at 3.8 seconds. The automatic version can reach 174 mph (280 km/h) and the manual's top speed is 188 mph (303 km/h). The GT uses some of the same aero components as the GT410 Sport, which helps it produce 141 lb (64 kg) of downforce at maximum speed. This variant of the Evora weighs between 3,104 lb (1,408 kg) and 3,199 lb (1,451 kg) depending on which options are selected. The optional Carbon Pack includes a carbon-fiber roof, rear tailgate, and front access panel which reduces weight by 49 lb (22 kg). The optional titanium exhaust reduces weight further by 22 lb (10 kg). The manual transmission weighs 24 lb (11 kg) less than the automatic. The Evora GT was discontinued after the 2021 model year and is set to be replaced by the all-new Lotus Emira in Spring 2022. 6,117 Evora have beenproduced overall.[20]

Evora Enduro GT Concept[]

2011-225917-lotus-evora-enduro-gt-concept-live-in-geneva-01-03-20111

During the 2011 Geneva Motor Show, Lotus announced the Evora Enduro GT concept, as a follow up to the Type 124 and GT4 race cars. Lotus is aiming for this car to enter into the LM GTE category by mid-2011, with a 444 hp (331 kW; 450 PS) Toyota-supplied V8.

Evora GT430 (2018)[]

The Lotus Evora GT430 was a street-legal, track-focused version of the Evora and was limited to only 60 units. The power was also better with 430 hp.

Worldwide[]

The Evora is to be sold in countries throughout the world.

Awards[]

The Evora received several accolades at its launch from the British motoring press, including: Britain's Best Driver's Car 2009 from Autocar and Car of the Year 2009, from Evo.

The car was reviewed by Jeremy Clarkson on the television show Top Gear. Overall his review was positive: he was very happy with the performance, handling and comfort. He was extremely impressed with the ride comfort even after driving it into a field saying "Here, the suspension is taking the knocks, not me." and described the car as "the only car I've ever driven, ever, which is a killer attack dog and an old sofa". However, he considered the rear seats to have not enough legroom, the interior felt tinny and the satellite navigation was sub-optimal.

Road & Track put the Evora in #2 place in their annual "Performance Car of the Year" contest in 2017, noting the Evora is "fully deserving of the ACBC badge on its nose, this brave and charming two-plus-two is perhaps the finest over-the-road enthusiast vehicle available for sale at any price."
