Designer Pininfarina

The strongest element in the creation of the Ferrari road car myth was the 2-seat sports car. Over the years, though, the cognoscenti have been aware of Ferrari's skill at producing luxury four seat cars that combine top performance with practicality. These are perhaps the truest "gran turismo" cars.

The 456 in its GT version with mechanical gearbox and GTA automatic, sought to underscore its difference from other cars by synthesizing the performance and driving pleasure of a sports car with the comfort and the space of a gran turismo. Pininfarina applied this philosophy to define the 456 shape, which was aggressive while compact and slippery. Special effort was applied to producing a 4-seater with overall dimensions similar to those of a classic 2-seater. In 2004,it was replaced by Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. It was the last Ferrari to use pop-up headlamps.

A Ferrari 456M

456M[]

The 465M was unveiled in 1998 as a facelift of the 456. It featured a redesigned exterior with a smaller air intake and a redesigned front bumper; its hood was also the first use of carbon fiber on a production car (the previous 456 used a composite material). A fixed rear spoiler also replaced the old motorized one. Additional changes were made to the exterior, with numerous small modifications made like the usage of a new stereo system, smaller gauges, and new seats. The power output remained unchanged, but the firing order was altered for smoother running.

456 Bicolore Scaglietti[]

In 2002-2003, the last years of the 456, customers could use the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Program to further personalize their cars. Unique modifications could be made with paint colors, interior options, handling, brakes, wheels, and more. Only 30 were made, 10 with the manual transmission, with one going to Michael Schumacher.

Special Editions[]

Numerous special editions were made by Ferrari and others to the 456, including:

Ferrari 456 GT Sedan: A special edition 4-door sedan version of the 456 built by Pininfarina for the Sultan of Brunei. At least three were made.

Ferrari 456 GT Venice: A special edition built by Pininfarina for the Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, a five-doored station wagon. Seven were made, six of which were bought and one remains in unknown hands. Each one may have cost about $1.5 million at the time.

Ferrari 456 GT Spyder: A special convertible model built by Pininfarina, again for the Sultan of Brunei. Two were made.

Ferrari 456 GT Cabriolet: An aftermarket conversion done by the California-based R. Straman Company, of which three were made.

Ferrari 456 Targa: A conversion on a 456 GTA with extensive interior modifications.

The former has a six-speed manual, and the latter has a four-speed automatic developed in partnership with FF Developments, in Livonia, MI (which was later purchased by Ricardo Engineering in the UK.) The automatic transmission used in the 456 was the second and last conventional hydraulic automatic transmission with a torque converter to be offered by Ferrari. (The transmission found its latest use in the 400/412 series.) The 5.5 L (5,473.91 cc) 65° V12 engine was derived from the Dino V6 rather than the more conventional 60° V12s used in the 412 and Daytona. It is rated at 442 PS (325 kW; 436 hp), with 4 valves per cylinder and Bosch Motronic M2.7 engine management.
