The BMW X1 is a line of subcompact luxury crossovers produced by BMW. Debuted in 2009, the first-generation X1 has been based on the E90 3 Series and offers rear-wheel drive layout as standard. At its introduction, it was positioned as the smallest SUV in BMW line-up below the X3, aiming a wider range of customers due to its smaller size, increased efficiency, and a lower price tag due to the all-wheel drive layout (xDrive) being optional.

Third generation (U11; 2022)[]
The U11 X1 was released in June 2022. Available powertrains include a turbocharged 3-cylinder, 4-cylinder petrol, inline-three diesel, inline-four diesel mild hybrid, petrol plug-in hybrid, and an electric variant.
Base models are front-wheel drive (branded as sDrive), with all-wheel drive (xDrive) available as an option (standard for some higher-end models). Just like with the BMW iX3, the all-electric iX1 will not be available in the United States and Canada.
The redesigned X1 has an updated interior similar to that of the iX, i4, and 2023 3 Series. It features a 10.25 inch digital gauge cluster as well as a 10.7 inch center screen running BMW's iDrive 8 infotainment system.
According to BMW, this X1 is 1.7 inches longer, 0.9 inches wider, and 1.7 inches taller than the previous generation, with a wheelbase that is 0.9 inches longer.
An M Sport package is available that adds adaptive suspension (available for the first time on the X1), a lower ride height, and interior and exterior styling elements.
Second generation (F48; 2016)[]
The F48 X1 is based on the modular front-wheel-drive-based UKL2 platform that is shared between BMW and MINI models, instead of being based on the rear-wheel drive 3 Series Touring platform as with the previous generation X1.
In comparison, the F48 X1 has a 90 mm (3.5 in) shorter wheelbase, and is 23 mm (0.9 in) wider, and 67 mm (2.6 in) taller compared to its predecessor. However, the new platform has allowed for increased interior legroom, headroom, and shoulder room.
A long-wheelbase model for the Chinese market (F49 model code) was unveiled at the 2016 Beijing Auto Show, and features a 110 mm (4.3 in) longer wheelbase. Long-wheelbase models share the same engines and also introduced a new all-wheel drive hybrid model called the xDrive25Le. These models went on sale in May 2016.
The xDrive25i is marketed as the xDrive28i in North American markets.
LCI[]
In May 2019, the facelifted LCI model was revealed on the official BMW website. Changes include new available LED headlights, bumpers (with LED taillights), new wheels, and a larger kidney grille reminiscent to other contemporary BMW models such as the F40 1 Series.
The BMW X1 xDrive25e plug-in hybrid version was revealed in September 2019.
Equipment[]
All models get 17-inch alloy wheels, a roof rack, an electrically operated tailgate, a 6.5-inch iDrive system, cloth seats, and 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats. The X1 is also offered in a Sport trim which adds sports seats, and in xLine and M Sport trim which adds heated leather seats. Available options include a panoramic sunroof, an upgraded iDrive Navigation Plus system with an 8.8-inch touch display, and a head-up display.
sDrive16d and 18i models are available with a 6-speed manual transmission and sDrive18i models can be upgraded to a 6-speed Automatic Transmission for 2016 to 2017 and a 7-speed Steptronic dual clutch transmission (DCT) from 2018 onwards. The rest of the model range receives the 8-speed Steptronic automatic manufactured by Aisin (AWF8F35) as standard from 2016 to 2017, and sDrive20i models receive a Steptronic 7-speed DCT (similar to the 2018-up sDrive18i) from 2018 onwards, while the rest of the range still gets the same 8-speed Steptronic automatic.
In September 2019, BMW revealed the X1 xDrive25e plug-in hybrid model, which combines a 1.5-litre 3-cylinder petrol engine with a 9.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack and a 94 hp (70 kW; 95 PS) electric motor. The system output is 220 hp (164 kW; 223 PS) and 385 N⋅m (284 lb⋅ft) of torque. The petrol engine is paired with a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission. The pure electric range as per NEDC is 57 kilometres (35 mi).
First generation (E84; 2009)[]
Development of the vehicle started in 2006 as petrol prices were going up, BMW identified the need for a smaller and more efficient model in its SUV line-up. As the result, it was reported that BMW has shortened the development and pre-production time by 40 percent compared to previous X Series models.
The project director of the X1, Peter Kist commented that "never before has BMW produced a model that is meant for such a wide customer range." He pointed out it is suitable for young people and older people, and as X1 is the first BMW X Series to be available in the sDrive trim (two-wheel drive), it is suitable for customers who do not need off-road capability.
The E84 X1 was revealed in a near-production prototype called the Concept X1 that was revealed at the Paris Motor Show in October 2008.
The final production version of the X1 is based on the same platform used in the E90 3 Series, and both have the same 2,760 mm (108.7 in) wheelbase. The platform is also used in the Zinoro 1E, which is an all-electric crossover based on the X1, with a rear-mounted 125 kW (168 hp) electric motor that produces 250 N⋅m (184 lb⋅ft) of torque.
The X1 is available in rear-wheel drive (marketed as sDrive), and all-wheel drive (xDrive) variants with a 40/60 rear-bias.
Equipment[]
The X1 offers 420 L (14.8 cu ft) of cargo volume. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split and increases the storage space to 1,350 L (47.7 cu ft). Standard equipment includes dual-zone climate control, parking sensors, 17-inch alloy wheels, and regenerative braking. From 2012, the X1 is also offered in xLine, Sport, and M Sport trims.
xDrive25i and 35i models are only available with a 6-speed automatic transmission. The rest of the model range receives a 6-speed manual transmission and all models (except the sDrive20d EfficientDynamics) are optionally available with an automatic transmission. 18i and 23d models receive a 6-speed automatic, while 20i, 16d, and 25d models are available with an 8-speed automatic.
28i, 18d, and 20d models featured a 6-speed automatic until 2011, before being replaced by an 8-speed transmission.
2012 facelift[]
The following changes were shown at the 2012 New York International Auto Show:
- Exterior design changes including: redesigned headlights, taillights, front bumpers, and redesigned mirrors with integrated indicators
- Interior changes including: an updated centre console design, new interior trim choices, and a new steering wheel design
- Introduction of xLine, Sport, and M Sport trims

The UK police uses all variants of X1 as Interceptors as part of a four-year deal beginning late 2010. Other cars in the docket include the 530d Saloon and Touring, 330d Saloon and Touring, X3 xDrive20d, X5 xDrive30d and xDrive40d. [1]
