Even before Fiat boss Sergio Marchionne started talking to Chrysler about a possible alliance, he spoke of his goal of reintroducing Alfa Romeo to the U.S. Alfa's most recent offering is the subcompact MiTo, based on the Fiat Grande Punto platform also shared with GM's Opel Corsa. But all three models are very different in character. While the Grande Punto is styled with clear, crisp lines in the classic Italian design tradition, the Corsa tries to look cute and friendly. The premium MiTo, on the other hand, comes across as decidedly retro, with strong visual ties to the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione supercar. GTA stands for Gran Turismo Alleggerita, a designation for lightweight, race-ready versions of existing Alfas that was first used in the mid-1960s. (Alfa now says the 'A' stands for Alleggerito, but replacing the female form is an attempt at rewriting history, we say). In the past few years, there were GTA versions of the 156 and the 147, and they were fast but not exactly lightweight. The MiTo GTA concept, however, has several carbon-fiber body parts, including the mirror caps, the rear spoiler, and—BMW M3–style—the roof. The braking system and chassis components rely on special aluminum components. It remains to be seen if these expensive alterations will be carried over from the concept to the production model.

Unique Attributes[]

As with every Alfa Romeo GTA, weight reduction was one of the main topics; body parts like the roof panel and the tailgate spoiler were made out of carbon fiber, with engineers making liberal use of aluminum in the suspension, braking components, and chassis. The show car also made heavy use of underbody aerodynamics, featuring a giant rear diffuser with the exhaust tips being fully integrated like a proper race car, a redesigned front bumper with bigger air intakes, a deeper splitter and a new version of the Alfa grille with the badge migrating on top of it. The prototype was sitting 20 mm lower to the ground than a standard Mito, featuring an active suspension setup, with the shocks being electronically controlled to offer class-leading dynamics during fast driving and maintain good levels of comfort in everyday use. The front suspension featured a revised geometry thanks to new aluminum arms while the rear end featured special bushings.
