The Subaru WRX is an all-wheel drive sport compact car manufactured by the Japanese automaker Subaru, originally based on the Impreza created for the World Rally Championship in 1992. Subaru claimed the name WRX stands for "World Rally eXperimental". Since 2014, the WRX lineup has been split from the Impreza, with a different body style that is not offered as an optional hatchback/wagon.

Recent Changes[]

  • At the 2011 Tokyo Auto Salon, Subaru launched two new versions of the WRX STi exclusively for the Japanese market. The first is the WRX STi spec C which remaps the ECU and adds new ball-bearings for the twin-scroll turbocharger. The result is an increased output figure of 304 hp (227 kW / 308 PS) and 317 lb-ft (430 Nm) of torque on the 2.0 liter turbo unit. Subaru also switched the rear limited-slip differential to a mechanical unit from the previous Torsen type, reinforced the front chassis with a new cross member and avoided weight gain through an aluminum bonnet, smaller battery and 18-inch light alloy wheels wrapped in 245/40R18 Bridgestone POTENZA RE070 tires. Gold-colored Brembo brake calipers are standard while Recaro sport seats come optionally. The second JDM only variant is the 400 unit special edition WRX STi tS. Based on the sedan, the tS features a carbon fiber roof, an aluminum hood, a front lip spoiler, an STI-tuned suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels, RECARO sport seats, push-button ignition and unique sill plates. Power comes from the same breathed engine as the Spec C or a single-scroll turbocharged 2.5-liter with 221 kW (300 PS / 296 hp) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) for the A-Line tS. The tS is attached to a six-speed manual transmission while the A-Line puts its power down through a five-speed automatic. Both cars go on sale in January 2011 with the tS priced from 4,020,000 yen ($48,000 / €36,520).[1][2]

  • MY 2011 will see two major introductions for the WRX STI. The first is a Europe-only 75 unit limited edition collaboration with legendary engine maker Cosworth called the Cosworth Impreza STI CS400. Essentially, the WRX STI's 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder has been breathed on and now puts out 400 hp @ 5750 rpm (over the stock 300hp @ 6000 rpm), has had its brakes upgraded with six-pot calipers and 355mm discs, as well as its suspension and sport exhaust system. 0 to 100km/h is claimed at 3.7 seconds. This car, like the Escort Cosy and the 190E Cosworth, will become a collectible classic. The second news is a mid-cycle upgrade for the current gen Impreza set to debut at the 2010 New York Auto Show. The new car will feature the revival of the massive rear spoiler, among other things. Cosworth Impreza STI CS400

  • The Cosworth WRX STI CS400 is a limited (75 units) version of the Impreza WRX STI for the UK market. It includes a Cosworth-tuned version of the standard STI engine rated at 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp),ban upper mesh grille with piano black finish on the top frame, modified front bumper with "Cosworth" emblem on the lower mesh grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, lip front spoiler, rear waist spoiler, Bilstein struts, Eibach springs, AP Racing's larger diameter ventilated front brakes with six-piston calipers, Recaro leather seats with "Cosworth" label, piano black center console panel, "Cosworth"-badged floor mats. The "Cosworth WRX STI CS400" was announced in late May 2010.

2011 Impreza WRX STI

  • The limited edition Subaru Impreza WRX STi Spec C Type RA-R has been released in 2007 only for the Japanese Domestic Market. It features a 2 litre boxer 4 with a bigger IHI turbocharger, remapped ECU and a bigger exhaust system producing 234 kW @ 6400 rpm and 430 Nm of torque @ 4400 rpm. It features bigger coil springs and dampers, 18 inch alloy wheels and upgraded Brembo brakes. The body remains unchanged apart from the carbonfibre front splitter and roof spoiler available. It's built in 300 units with 3 choices of colour including yellow, white and WRC blue. This limited edition model is the last ever model built under the GD chassis.

The fifth-generation WRX was previewed by a series of concept cars branded as VIZIV Performance Concept as early as 2017. The production WRX was redesigned for the 2022 model year and moved to the Subaru Global Platform. Subaru was set to debut the all-new 2022 WRX on August 19, 2021, at the 2021 New York International Auto Show. However, due to the auto show being canceled, the unveiling was rescheduled for September 10.

In March 2022, Subaru announced they would not market the expected fifth-generation WRX STI high-performance model with an internal-combustion engine. Dominick Infante of Subaru stated "[A new WRX STI] would have a very limited shelf life ... The [emissions] regulations are changing so quickly that it kind of wouldn't make any sense." The WRX generation after VB may include a WRX STI, but that future WRX STI is likely to include a hybrid or battery-electric drivetrain.

North America[]

On September 10, 2021, the new second-generation standalone Subaru WRX (fifth generation for the WRX nameplate) was revealed for the North American market. It features a new FA24F 2.4-liter turbocharged horizontally opposed 4-cylinder boxer engine that produces 271 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Engine updates include larger pistons, an electronically controlled wastegate, and air bypass valves. Transmission choices are either a new CVT called the Subaru Performance Transmission (SPT) or a six-speed manual; the SPT offers an all-wheel-drive system with variable torque distribution, while the manual transmission is equipped with a center differential and viscous coupling. When equipped with the "Drive Mode Select System", the car is equipped with electronically controlled adaptive dampers, which is a first for the WRX.

Japan[]

The fifth-generation WRX S4 for the Japanese market made its debut on November 25, 2021. Like the other regions, the WRX S4 is equipped with the FA24 2.4L direct-injection turbo boxer, tuned to produce 202 kW (275 PS; 271 hp) at 5600 RPM and 375 N⋅m (277 lb⋅ft) between 2000–4800 RPM, coupled with the continuously-variable "Subaru Performance Transmission", providing an estimated fuel consumption of 10.8 km/L (25 mpg‑US).

Initially, it was available in two models: GT-H and STI Sport R; starting prices were ¥4,004,000 (GT-H model) and ¥4,389,000 (STI Sport R). Within those models, an optional "EX" grade is available for an additional ¥385,000 that adds the Subaru "EyeSight X" advanced driver-assistance system. The instrument panel of the "EX" grades use a 12.3 in (310 mm) LCD display, while the conventional grades use two analog instruments with a small 4.2 in (110 mm) central display. A 9 in (230 mm) LCD display for navigation is optional for the non-EX grades, while EX grades receive a portrait orientation 11.6 in (290 mm) LCD display in the center console for additional controls and displays. Compared to the GT-H, the STI Sport R model upgrades include electronically controlled dampers.

In January 2022, Subaru and STI jointly exhibited several concept models, including the WRX S4 STI Performance, which mainly includes cosmetic upgrades, and the world premiere of the STI E-RA Concept, billed as a carbon-neutral car.

Fifth generation (VA; 2014-2021)[]

For the VA series WRX released in 2014 for the 2015 model year, Subaru decided to move away from marketing the WRX and WRX STI under the Impreza name. This time, the Impreza name was dropped in all markets in which the new model is named simply as the WRX, as had been the case in North America with the previous model, while in Japan it was sold as the WRX S4.

The WRX and WRX STI are the performance model based on the GJ/GP Impreza with higher output engines, firmer suspension, larger brakes, slightly resculpted body panels, lowered ride height and larger intakes. The body design also took a stronger departure from the Impreza donor model than in the past. The general WRX profile/silhouette was carried over from the Impreza, as were the front doors, trunk lid, and interior. However, the entire front end bodywork plus the rear quarter panels were unique to the WRX. The rear doors received a subtle reskin with an upwards kink and revised character line, but retained an otherwise identical shape.

Subaru had promised to completely move the WRX and STI off the Impreza chassis and body to create a standalone model,. The VA-body WRX is based on a modified Impreza body and chassis, with the Impreza name dropped from the WRX in all markets. For this generation, Subaru decided to not produce a WRX or WRX STI hatchback as had been previously offered. The previous generation hatchback made up approximately 50 percent of US WRX and WRX STI sales.

Updates[]

In January 2017 for the North America market, Subaru announced several improvements that addressed some of the criticism of the 2015 model debut, including a newly revised suspension, revised, upgraded interior materials and a quieter cabin, and a revised front styling. For the WRX, a newly available performance Package option included Recaro front seats with 8-way power driver's seat, improved brake pads, and a moonroof delete to reduce weight. Also new was upgraded EyeSight Driver Assist Technology safety features.

For the 2018 model year, the WRX received some mid-generation improvements. The 2018 model first went on sale at dealerships in summer 2017. The 2018 WRX and WRX STI mid-model improvement continued with the 6-speed manual transmission came as standard equipment, and the optional Lineartronic CVT automatic transmission with Intelligent, Sport 6-speed paddle shift emulation and Sport# (pronounced "Sport Sharp") 8-speed paddle shift emulation. The standard WRX added heated exterior mirrors (already a standard on higher level trims). A new, larger 5.9-inch high-definition multi-function display replaced the older 4.3-inch unit allowing the driver to see vehicle functions more easily. The WRX Premium trim added a larger multimedia audio unit. WRX Limited models added an 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar adjustment.

In May 2018, the 2019 model year WRX and WRX STI was announced. The 2019 model first went on sale at dealerships in the summer of 2018.

The 2019 model introduced a new Subaru STARLINK infotainment system integrated standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as an optional Harman Kardon entertainment system and an optional larger infotainment screen size from 6.2 inches to 7.0 inches.

The 2019 WRX equipped with the optional Lineartronic CVT also came standard with the Subaru EyeSight driver assist technology. On previous models, Eyesight was only available as an option package. Also optional on the CVT equipped WRX was Reverse Automatic Braking, a feature unlikely to be implemented in non-CVT equipped vehicles.

Subaru's collision avoidance system, known as EyeSight, is only available on CVT models, along with reverse automatic braking. EyeSight was made standard on all CVT-equipped models starting with model year 2020. European sales of the WRX STI were ended in 2018.

Special editions[]

WRX STI S207[]

In the same year, Subaru also released the WRX STI S207, limited to 400 units sold only for the Japanese market. The S207 used the 2 liter EJ20 engine which was tuned to 241 kW (328 PS; 323 hp) and 318 lb⋅ft (431 N⋅m) of torque. Upgrades also include a quicker-ratio 11-to-1 steering rack (compared to 13-to-1 for the stock unit). STI-spec Recaro front bucket seats, Bilstein adjustable DampMatic II front suspension, and drilled rotors clamped by Brembo monoblock six-piston front calipers and four-pot rear calipers. Up to 200 of the units could be equipped with the NBR Challenge Package, which features a carbon-fibre wing and a badge commemorating Subaru's class victory at the 2015 Nürburgring 24 Hours.

WRX STI Hyper Blue[]

In 2016, Subaru released the WRX STI Hyper Blue special edition series, with production limited to 700 units for the United States. The new color covers the outside, and it is also offset with gloss black 18-inch BBS wheels, badges and mirror caps. Blue stitching brings the color into the interior, and Subaru's seven-inch navigation system with a nine-speaker stereo is standard for this version. In Australia, Subaru announced the WRX Premium Hyper Blue special edition with the CVT automatic will be limited to 200 units targeted to customers, and WRX STI Premium with the six-speed gearbox will be limited to just 50 units.

WRX STI S208[]

In 2017, Subaru released the WRX STI S208, limited to 450 units sold only for the Japanese market. The S208 used a 2.0-liter EJ20 engine tuned to 329 hp (245 kW) and 432 N⋅m (319 lbf⋅ft) of torque. It has other upgrades similar to those of the WRX STI S207- a quicker 11:1 ratio steering rack, Bilstein DampMatic II front suspension, Recaro front bucket seats, 19-inch BBS wheels, drilled rotors clamped by Brembo monoblock six-piston front calipers and four-pot rear calipers, intercooler water spray, a torque vectoring system, and more. Up to 350 units could be equipped with the NBR Challenge Package, which features a carbon fibre wing, front lip spoiler, and roof. The S208 was offered in 3 colors- WR Blue Pearl, Crystal White Pearl, and Cool Grey Khaki (only available with the NBR Challenge Package). Standard models cost ¥6,264,000 with tax and NBR Challenge Package-equipped models cost ¥6,890,400 ($63,229) with the carbon fibre lip spoiler or ¥7,106,400 with the carbon fibre rear wing.

WRX STI Diamond Edition[]

As a way of celebrating 30 years of the STI nameplate (in 2018), Subaru offered a limited edition WRX STI Diamond Edition which was developed by Subaru Southern Africa's technical team making it exclusively available to the region with only 30 being produced. The WRX STI Diamond Edition is powered by a 2.5-liter, high-boost turbocharged Boxer engine that offers 260 kW (350 hp) at 4,500 rpm and 464 N⋅m (342 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,000 rpm. The remapping of the Electronic Control Unit and the fitment of a performance exhaust system has contributed to improved performance. A new engine brace has been fitted for better stability and balance. The WRX STI Diamond Edition rides 20mm lower than the standard WRX STI and the body kit, in a High Viz yellow further lowers the front-end by 10 mm. The spoiler vane gets a stainless steel STI badge unique to this limited edition model and high gloss black Diamond Edition badges appear on the sides of the rear wing. The WRX STI Diamond Edition rides on 19-inch lightweight and darkened aluminum Y-design alloy wheels.

WRX Raiu Edition[]

In 2018, Subaru launched the 2019 WRX Raiu edition, the first special edition Subaru to be sold in Canada for over 15 years. This model is similar to the Series. Gray edition sold in the US, with its name derived from the Japanese word for thunderstorm. This model was not available with a CVT, buyers could only get a 6-speed manual transmission. The Raiu Edition got sporty upgrades, like an STI-branded front lip, side sill, and rear side spoilers along with a unique short-throw shifter. Black interior and exterior accents were added, with gunmetal finish 18" alloy wheels and Cool Grey Khaki paint also being the only wheel/color options. Jurid front breaks and red-painted calipers were also standard. The Raiu Edition also got the Sport-tech RS trim's existing features, including Recaro front seats with "Ultrasuede," a seven-inch touchscreen "Starlink" multimedia system, and a nine-speaker Harmon Kardon stereo system. Only 100 units of the Raiu Edition were made available, with a price point of $40,995 CAD.

WRX STI S209[]

For the model year 2019, a special edition WRX STI S209 was made available, being the first S series STI sold in the USA, and the third S series based on the VA series platform, following the S207 and S208. The S209 is the most expensive Subaru ever at US$64,000, and is only sold in the US with 209 being built. It is also the most powerful, with 341 hp (254 kW) and 330 lb⋅ft (450 N⋅m) of torque out of a modified EJ257. Canards are added to the front, and the STI Type RA's carbon roof and wing are retained. The suspension is improved and derived from other S series cars, along with Subaru's Nürburgring race car. The car is available in WR Blue with grey wheels and Crystal White with gold wheels. The S209 is also transported from the Gunma, Japan plant to Subaru's Kiryu-Kougo subsidiary to be finished since the S209 does not meet the standards for cars manufactured in Gunma. The car is sold under the STI brand rather than the Subaru brand, which has caused difficulties importing the car into the US.

WRX STI EJ20 Final Edition[]

Again for the 2020 model year but only available to the Canadian market is the arrival of the winter warrior WRX STI Kanrai Edition. Only 75 units were available to the Canadian market compared to the Raiu Edition's 100 units. The WRX STI Kanrai Edition was built on the WRX STI Sport-Tech foundation. Kanrai, which translates to "winter thunder," sports an exclusive Ceramic White exterior paint along with the aggressive characteristics found in the WRX STI. Outfitted on this WRX STI is STI-tuned Bilstein performance suspension, lightweight 19" BBS forged alloy bronze-painted wheels paired with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires, which deliver significant handling dynamics and grip. The standard Brembo 6-pot front and 2-pot rear brake system with cross-drilled rotors and silver painted calipers. Subaru removed the spare tire and replaced it with a repair kit to help this STI shave some pounds. The Kanrai incorporates a black low-profile lip spoiler, black badging, mirror caps, and shark fin antenna to complement the Ceramic White paint. What makes it pop is the black front grille receives the STI's unique cherry colour.

Fourth generation: (2007 – 2014)[]

Subaru debuted the turbocharged WRX performance variant of the third generation series alongside the mainstream naturally aspirated models on 2 April 2007. For this generation, most markets adopted the abbreviated name "WRX", although the Japanese, North American and UK markets retained the full "Subaru Impreza WRX" title. The 2.5-liter EJ255 engine is largely unchanged internally. The main change is the airflow efficiency of the heads. Changes in the engine compartment consist primarily of a fourth generation Legacy GT style intake manifold and intercooler. The TD04 turbo remains from the previous generation, however it has been adjusted to fit the new intake design. Power output consists of 169 kW (227 hp) and 320 N⋅m (236 lb⋅ft) from its 2.5-liter engine. It was offered in either a five-speed manual, or 4 speed automatic. The five-speed manual transmission was changed to the same found in the fourth-generation Legacy GT. The rear limited slip differential has been discarded in exchange for the new VDC (Vehicle Dynamics Control) system. The weight of the car also has been reduced and gives the WRX a 0 to 100 km/h (0 to 62 mph) time of 5.8 seconds. In contrast, curb weight of the standard Impreza model is around 27.2 kg (60 lb) heavier. For the US market, the WRX was offered in "base", Premium, and Limited trim levels. In Australia, the WRX is available as a sedan or hatchback. An optional premium package adds the satellite navigation with DVD player and 7-inch screen, leather upholstery and a sunroof.

In response to criticism that the third generation WRX suspension is too soft, and needing to keep on par with rival car companies new releases, Subaru issued several changes in 2008 for the 2009 model year, known in the UK as the WRX-S. The EJ255 engine received an output boost to 198 kW (265 hp) and 331 N⋅m (244 lb⋅ft) of torque by swapping the previous TD04 turbocharger to an IHI VF52. This led to the car now achieving a 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) time of 4.7 seconds, as tested by Car and Driver.[26] In addition, the updated model received altered springs/struts, sway bars, and Dunlop summer tires to improve handling. Exterior cosmetic changes included the 2008 WRX Premium aero package, STi spoiler (Hatchback only), updated grill with WRX badge, and darker Gunmetal colored wheels as standard equipment. Interior changes consisted of aluminum pedals, silver trim around the shifter, red stitching on the shift boot and seats, and a red WRX logo embroidered on the driver and passenger seat. Further changes in 2010 (for the 2011 model year) saw the WRX gain the wide-body shell from the STI, as well as the addition of quad muffler tips with diffuser. The new model gains 15 kg (33 lb). Firmer rear sub-frame bushings and wider 17-inch wheels contribute to improved traction.

Debuting at the Tokyo Auto Show in October 2007, WRX STI versions build further on the standard WRX cars. The STI available in Japan is fitted with the 2.0-liter EJ207 engine with twin scroll turbocharger generating 227 kW (308 PS) at 6,500 rpm and 422 N⋅m (311 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4,400 rpm. Export markets receive the higher-displacement 2.5-liter EJ257 unit with the single-scroll VF48 turbocharger rated at 221 kW (300 PS) and 407 N⋅m (300 lb⋅ft) of torque. The turbocharger directs air through a larger top-mount intercooler which has lost the red "STI" that was on previous generations. The STI (3,395 lbs) is heavier than the WRX (3,174- 3,240 lbs depending on trim) due to a more robust transmission, rear differential and other chassis reinforcements.

Like the standard WRX, the third generation model was shortened to "Subaru WRX STI", with the Japanese markets notably abstaining from this convention. To differentiate the STI from the regular WRX, Subaru opted to manufacture the STI with a wider body and therefore track—as noted by the flared wheel arches. Furthermore, Subaru utilized aluminum suspension components for the STI. Electronic modifications include a multi-mode electronic stability control with "normal", "traction", and "off" modes; Subaru Intelligent-Drive (SI-Drive) with three modes: "intelligent", "sport", and "sport sharp"; and multi-mode driver controlled center differential (DCCD). The DCCD is a combined mechanical and solenoid operated limited-slip differential which enables the driver to switch between manual and automated centre differential locking. The locking strength can vary from fully open to fully locked [27] with a 40/60 front/rear open torque bias.

The STI hatchback was released in the United States in March 2008.

A Subaru Impreza WRX STI Group R4 was entered in the 2012 FIA Asia-Pacific Rally.

Australia also received the 2011 model year STI as a sedan to complement the hatchback released in 2008. Australian STIs were offered in standard form, plus the STI spec.R. An electric sunroof, leather upholstery, satellite navigation, and BBS wheels are standard on the spec.R, while Recaro seats are optional. A facelift of the STI arrived in 2010 for the 2011 model year, distinguished by a new front bumper. Tweaks to the suspension—stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, new pillow ball bushings on the front lower arms, as well as wider standard tires—had the effect of improved handling.

A facelift of the STI arrived in 2010 for the 2011 model year, distinguished by a new front bumper. Tweaks to the suspension—stiffer springs, larger anti-roll bars, new pillow ball bushings on the front lower arms, as well as wider standard tires—had the effect of improved handling.

As of March 2022 Subaru have confirmed "there will be no STI variant for the new generation Subaru WRX" – leaving the standard WRX and its 202kW/350Nm engine as the most powerful version of the rally legend the company will build.

Subaru WRX STI Takumi (2008)[]

Main article: Subaru Impreza WRX STI Takumi Concept

It's a concept vehicle based on the Impreza WRX STI hatchback with upgraded springs and shocks, revised suspension bits, lightweight 12-spoke wheels, undisclosed engine tweaks and a slightly reworked exterior.

The vehicle was unveiled in Motorsport Japan 2008.

20th Anniversary Edition WRX STI (2008)[]

It is a limited (300 units) version of the Impreza WRX STI hatchback for the Japanese market, with a new set of coilovers with retuned springs and shocks, thicker front and rear anti-roll bars, 18-inch aluminum wheels, white body colour, black lip spoiler, Recaro leather seats with red stitching, a commemorative plaque on the center console, new set of door sills.

WRX STI spec C (2009)[]

It is a limited (900 units) version of the Impreza WRX STI for the Japanese market. It included engine, suspension, and body parts improvement over the regular model. The ball bearing on the turbine axle was modified to reduce friction, the ECU retuned for better response, and an intercooler water spray fitted. The cross member, suspension and power steering were also improved for better handling and body rigidity. An aluminum hood, laminar window glass, and a lighter battery helped to reduce weight.

WRX STI 330S / WRX STI Type UK, WRX STI 380S[]

They are versions of the Impreza WRX STI for the UK market, with specific tuning by Prodrive. The WRX STI 330S includes increased engine power to 330 PS (243 kW; 325 hp). The WRX STI 380S includes increased engine power to 380 PS (279 kW; 375 hp), new wheels, an upgraded body kit. The vehicles were unveiled at the British Motor Show.

Subaru announced, on 10 September 2008, that the 380S variation would not be produced, due to homologation and specification difficulties. However, the regular 330S model did enter production as the "WRX STI Type UK".

WRX STI R205[]

The R205 was a complete car from STI; the "R" signifying the "road". Based on the Impreza WRX STI, the model utilised technology developed through STI's participation in the 24 Hours Nürburgring Race to the full. As the name implies, focus was given to the car's performance on public roads in its development in order to create the best road-going car possible. As for the engine, maximum output was increased to 235 kW (320 PS; 315 hp) at 6400 rpm and the maximum torque to 432 N⋅m (319 lbf⋅ft) at 4400 rpm by the introduction of such components as a special ball bearing twin scroll turbo. In addition, Brembo 13-inch discs and calipers were installed on the front and rear brakes. With regard to the exterior, aerodynamic devices including STI front and rear under spoilers were fitted. In order to further enhance the "flexible yet elegant driving feel" that STI aims for, a newly developed Flexible Draw Stiffener was installed along with STI dampers/springs and Flexible Tower Bar. As a result, the car could achieve exceptional vehicle maneuverability, which made the car react smoothly to the driver's intention. Production was limited to 400 units.

Cosworth WRX STI CS400[]

The Cosworth WRX STI CS400 is a limited (75 units) version of the Impreza WRX STI for the UK market. It includes a Cosworth-tuned version of the standard STI engine rated at 400 PS (294 kW; 395 hp),[38] an upper mesh grille with piano black finish on the top frame, modified front bumper with "Cosworth" emblem on the lower mesh grille, 18-inch alloy wheels, lip front spoiler, rear waist spoiler, Bilstein struts, Eibach springs, AP Racing's larger diameter ventilated front brakes with six-piston calipers, Recaro leather seats with "Cosworth" label, piano black center console panel, "Cosworth"-badged floor mats.

The "Cosworth WRX STI CS400" was announced in late May 2010.

WRX STI S206, WRX STI S206 NBR CHALLENGE PACKAGE (2011–2012)[]

It is a limited (300 units) version of the Impreza WRX STI sedan for the Japanese market.[40][41] To commemorate the SP3T class win at the 2011 Nürburgring (NBR) 24-Hour Race, a limited "NBR CHALLENGE PACKAGE" was offered, limited to 100 units; this package included a carbon fiber roof and dry carbon rear wing. Compared to prior S-series limited production models (S202 / S203 / S204 / R205), power remained unchanged at 235 kW (320 PS; 315 hp) at 6400 rpm, but torque output was 431 N⋅m (318 lbf⋅ft) at 3200–4400 rpm. Weight also increased to 1,470 kg (3,240 lb).

Second generation (2001 - 2006)[]

GD chassis

2000 Subaru Impreza WRX STI and 2001 Subaru Impreza Rally Car

In 2001, the Impreza line received a complete update. The chassis was stiffened so that it had 120% torsional stiffness increase. The WRX STi gained 17" x 7.5" inch alloy wheels over the previous 16" x 7" inch wheels. The 5 speed transmission (reputed to be one of the car's weakpoints) was changed to a STi engineered 6 speed manual transmission. The engine was retained from the Version 6 STi and still retains the semi-closed deck block and is still labeled as the EJ207. However, the turbochargers are IHI models. The interior was updated with a STi logo on the gauge. The STi's gauge also has a red shift light. The STi's and optioned Type RA STi have received Brembo 4 pot front and 2 pot rear brakes while the bare-bones Type RA STi still carried the Subaru 4 pot front and 2 pot rear brakes. Externally, the STis had larger hoodscoops and had foglight covers with STi embossed on them. The DCCD was updated so it can work with anti-lock brakes. During braking, when the ABS is on, the DCCD will set itself to open-mode (no locking).

The version nomenclature was dropped from the name. To distinguish between the years, Japanese and other auto-enthusiasts often refer to the chassis as GDB (the STi had a 'B' where as the regular WRX had an 'A') revision A to F where F is the current (2006) version.

Facelift[]

2007 Subaru Impreza WRX STI

From June 2005 in Japan (2006 model year) Impreza WRX STI's have been redesigned, along with new headlights, taillights, and bumpers. Greek designer Andreas Zapatinas, formerly of Alfa Romeo, penned the updated front-end in 2004. The facelift introduced Subaru's new corporate face, including its controversial "jet intake and wings" grille design that first appeared on the Subaru R2 kei car. The new corporate face was designed to pay homage to their aircraft manufacturing roots, the Nakajima Aircraft Company. This version of the Impreza has gained the nickname 'Hawk Eye' among Subaru enthusiasts.

2006 Impreza WRX models gained some chassis and braking system enhancements. On sedan models, aluminum front suspension lower A-arms reduced unsprung weight. (The rear suspension gained forward aluminum lateral links in the 2005 model year.) The steering rack was updated for improved steering feel and the steering rack ratio was changed to 15.0:1. On all WRX models, 7-spoke 17 in × 7 in (430 mm × 180 mm) aluminum-alloy wheels replaced the previous 5 spoke 16 in × 6.5 in (410 mm × 170 mm) wheels. Tires were 215/45ZR17 versus 205/55R16 before. The more powerful brake system employed 11.5 in (292 mm) vented front discs and four-piston calipers instead of the previous versions two-piston calipers. The rear brakes were 11.3 in (287 mm) ventilated discs replacing the previous 10.3 in (262 mm) solid discs, and two-piston calipers replacing single-piston calipers. The calipers are painted red with the SUBARU name in white overlain.

The US-spec STIs receive the same facelift as the Japanese-spec STIs. Mechanically speaking, the DCCD (Driver Controlled Center Differential) and the engine mounts have been changed. Like the Japanese-spec STIs engine mounts were changed from metal to liquid-filled plastic mounts to reduce vibrations into the car's cabin. The manufacturer will replace them, under warranty, if broken, with the 2005 rubber and metal mounts. Later 2006 vehicles were equipped from the factory with 2005 mounts. The center differential is updated with the addition of a mechanical limited slip mechanism to supplement the electromagnetic DCCD. The torque split is changed to 41/59. The oil pump within the transmission was also deleted. The 2006 STI weighs approximately 3,350 lb (1,520 kg).

Japanese-spec

Rev. A (2001): In 2001, the WRX STi received the aforementioned updates. The WRX Type RA STi was produced. The STi wagon was still produced but it's engine only produced 260 PS (191 kW). The STi foglight covers had white STi lettering on them.

The WRX Type RA STi was used for the Group N homologation.

Rev. B (2002): Along with the rest of the Impreza line, the grill and body of the WRX STi was minorly updated by Peter Stevens to give it a more angular look when seen from the side. The foglight covers had pink STi lettering. Not much else besides minor suspension improvements and a small increase in torque output was done.

The WRX Type RA STi was dropped for a new WRX STi Spec C. This model was much lighter than the WRX Type RA as it received lighter glass and body panels. The Spec C's handing was much improved due to an increase in caster (from 3.5 degrees to 5 degrees). This was achieved not by changing the suspension mounting point, but by lenghtening the wheelbase (15 mm). This was done by including different control arms. This increased caster significantly helped the turn-in capabilities of the car. The Spec C also has a steering rack ratio of 13:1. The transmission is supplied with its own oil cooler.

The WRX STi was used for Group N homologation.

The WRX STi wagon had ceased to be produced.

Rev. C (2003): Not much was changed.

The WRX STi was used for Group N homologation.

Rev. D (2004): The WRX STi received the same Peter Stevens-designed facelift that rest of the Imprezas received. The WRX STi is now capable of being ordered with DCCD.

The WRX STi Spec C Type RA was released. It sported a carbon-fiber wing and a carbon fiber lip. It also had a new set of BBS wheels as well as a newly tuned engine.

The WRX STi V-limited was released. It sports 4-way dampers tuned by Subaru World Rally Team's Group N driver Toshi Arai.

The WRX STi was used for Group N homologation.

Rev. E (2005): The WRX STi receives the same increase in wheelbase as the Spec C. All STis received additional rear fender flaring in order to allow an increase in wheel size. The wheel size went from 17" x 7.5" to 17" x 8". In accordance with the increased wheel width, steering lock-to-lock turns have been reduced. Wheel hub strength was improved. The P.C.D. was changed from 5 x 100 to 5 x 114.3.

The DCCD mechanism is improved with the addition of a yaw rate sensor that helps the AWD's computer determine torque distribution to the wheels.

The WRX STi Spec C WR-limited was used for Group N homologation.

Rev. F (2006): The WRX STi continues on relatively the same. The Impreza line's looks have been changed by Andreas Zapatinas.

The WRX STi Spec C's receives the Arai tuned dampers and a 21-mm swaybar. The rear suspension is changed from rubber bushings to pillowball bushings. The strut tower was further stiffened for improved handling and stability. The strut towers were reinforced for better handling and better ride characteristics. The engine mounts were changed from metal to liquid-filled plastic mounts to reduce vibrations into the car's cabin.

The DCCD is updated with the use of a torque-sensing mechanism inside the DCCD. The torque split is changed to 41/59.

The WRX STi Spec C was used for Group N homologation.

Japanese-spec Special Variants

S202: This car was an S-series Impreza based on the Spec C. All of the suspension and powertrain parts included STi parts from the STi part catalogue. The interior included special edition black seats with red STi logo stitching. A smaller, lightweight AC compressor was fitted to save weight. The brake rotors were gas slotted. The rims were STi labeled Ray's Volks rims.

S203: This limited edition Subaru was an S-series Impreza based on the WRX STi. Again it is basically a car with all the STi parts available. It was shod with custom made 18 inch BBS rims with Pirellis. The crankshaft is balanced by hand.

S204: The new S204 was released at the end of 2005. It is based on the WRX STi. It does away with the roof spoiler and has a different grill from the rest of the Impreza line.

Asia, Oceania and European-spec

In 2001, most of Asia, Oceania and Europe received the new STi. The engine was detuned to meet emission standards. Instead of the stated 280ps, the engines produced 265 PS (195 kW).

In 2006, the engine was changed to the EJ25 and produces 280 PS (206 kW). The STis finally received the DCCD that US models had from the beginning and the extra wheelbase increase like the Japanese-spec WRX STi Spec C.


US-spec

In 2004, Subaru of America announced it will sell the WRX STi. Subaru Tecnica International's president said in an interview that he wishes to best the Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution in the US. Thus, the each iteration of the US-spec WRX STi was essentially the same as the respective J-spec STi Spec C (the highest performing STi version barring special variants). All the part numbers match up, including the part-numbers for the glass windows and dampeners. However, instead of the EJ207, the USA receives the first EJ257, a 2.5 liter version of the EJ207. Also, unlike the EJ207, it features hypereutectic cast pistons as opposed to the forged pistons in the EJ207. The steering rack is the standard STi's 15.2:1 instead of the Spec C's 13:1

Many people surmise the reason why the US-spec WRX STi does not handle as well as a Spec C is because the EJ257's extra weight and the slower steering rack hampers the feel and balance of the car.

The current-generation MY2006 STi weighs approximately 3350 lb.

GC chassis comparison to the GD chassis[]

Pros

Subaru claims that the GD chassis is 148 percent and 82 percent stiffer in torsional and beam rigidity, respectively, than the GC chassis. Due to the increase in stiffness, the car has much better stability in corners and is easier to control at the limit. The GC chassis is so weak compared to today's cars that engineers called the body a "Watermelon frame", referring to how a watermelon shatters on impact.

In terms of safety, the IGD chassis scored much higher than the GC chassis and earned a "Good" rating (highest mark) from the IIHS's offset crash test. 4 stars front driver, 5 star front passenger and 4 star side safety ratings from the NHTSA. In a magazine article from the Dec. 2005 Firehouse magazine (a periodical written and made for firefighters), Ron Moore writes how it is well-known that the Impreza chassis has great protection in its B-pillars. This side structure has 8 layers of high-strength, high-tension steel including a round steel bar running through the middle. The author notes how drivers simply walk away from horrific side-impact accidents.

Cons

One of the biggest complaints with the GD chassis is that it gains nearly 200 kg in weight over the GC chassis. Much of this weight came in the form of chassis stiffening as the car was made to meet every countries' crash standards. The weight also hampers the cars manueverability, transistions and turn-in capabilities. The GC Imprezas were notable for being very lightweight despite having 4WD, the WRX Type STi Version VI, at 1260 kg, was lighter than the concurrent Mazda RX-7 type RZ (1270 kg) and Honda NSX type S Zero (1270 kg). In this fashion, the GC chassis has a better advantage.

The author mentioned above also notes that the Jaws of Life need to cut the Subaru's B-pillars at certain points in order to cut through the car frame. This information was not as well-spread before, so there have been many incidences where firefighters could not cut the B-pillars due to their structural integrity. To some people, this might be a concern if the driver or passengers need to be cut out of the vehicle quickly.

First Generation/Origins (1992 - 2000)[]

GC chassis

Impreza-wrx-sti-rally

There were 6 noted versions of the STi. The different versions were marketed with consecutive numbers. Another way to tell the version of a WRX STi was to look at the chassis code. All WRX STis have the beginning chassis code of GC8 then followed by a letter from A to G.

Version I (1994) - GC8A/B: The first STi had 250 PS (184 kW) @6500 rpm and 31.5 kgf·m (309 N·m) @3500 rpm and weighed 1230 kg (2,710 lb). This version was the only version where the standard cars were taken at the end of the assembly line and replaced by STi parts. After this version, the standard STi was built alongside the WRX on the production lines.

The WRX Type RA ([Nürburgring] Record Attempt) STi produced 275 PS (202 kW) and 32.5 kgf·m (319 N·m) of torque. This version of the WRX STi was a stripped out car that had no sound-deadening, radio or air-conditioning. It came sparsely equipped as it was to be sold to racing teams that would throw out the cheap parts for racing parts. This version of the WRX came with a Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD). This device was an electromechanical differential that could lock the differential. This allows the amount of torque sent to the front and rear wheels vary from a split of 35/65 to 50/50. The DCCD would be beneficial to people who used it in various rally conditions.

Version II (1995) - GC8C: The regular STi's engine output stood at 275 PS (202 kW) and 32.5 kgf·m (319 N·m) of torque. This was the year that STi started painting the exhaust manifolds red. The car weighed 1240 kg and had gold wheels like the one on the World Rally Championship Impreza.

The V-limited STi edition was produced. It was a limited edition was often used to celebrate a Manufacturer or Driver title award to Subaru's World Rally Team. The interior is colored blue on the seat inserts and carpeting. The WRX Type RA STi received a radio and air-conditioning in the V-limited form. 1000 WRX STi Version 2 V-limited were produced. 555 (the cigarette brand that was the primier sponsor of the Subaru World Rally Team) WRX Type RA STi Version 2 V-limited were produced.

Version III (1996) - GC8D: The engine was vastly updated and was given the name Boxer Master 4. It developed the then-established gentlemen's agreement power limit of 280 PS (206 kW). Torque peaked at 4000 rpm with a value of 35.0 kgf·m (343 N·m). The car gained 10 more kilograms and weighed at 1250 kg. The STi shared the same face lift that the rest of the Impreza line received.

With Version III came the start of the coupe version of the WRX STi. This car was to be the new basis for rally races. It is called the WRX Type R STi. The coupe was chosen by Prodrive because it was smaller, lighter and stiffer than the 4 door version. It was essentially a 2 door version of the WRX Type RA STi meaning it had DCCD, little sound-insulating material, close-gear ratios and the gearbox was hardened. This car also had an intercooler spray to cooler the intake charge for the turbocharger. This car was produced on an order-only basis.

The WRX Type RA was not produced and there were only 500 of the WRX STi Version 3 V-limited produced.

Version IV (1997) - GC8E: The power was again increased. This time 280 PS (206 kW) was produced, but the torque was increased to 36.0 kgf·m (353 N·m).

Again, like the Version II, there were 555 WRX Type RA STi Version 4 V-limited cars produced. The WRX Type R STi Version 4 V-limited was produced on an orders-only basis with a 3 month waiting period.

Version V (1998) - GC8F: The power stayed the same as the previous version. The engine layout and design was made cleaner. This engine was dubbed as the Boxer Phase2 engine. The facelift the rest of the Impreza line also applied to here. The WRX STi weighed 1270 kg.

The V in "V-Limited" was dropped. There were 1000 WRX Type RA STi Version 5 Limited cars and the WRX Type R STi Version 5 Limited cars had a 4 month waiting period for each order.

Version VI (1999) - GC8G: Again the power stayed the same. Most the changes were cosmetic. The wing was sculpted to be more aggressive.

There were 2000 WRX STi Version 6 Limited and 1000 WRX Type R Version 6 Limited cars produced.

Japanese-spec Special Variants

22B STi (1998): In 1998, Subaru of Japan produced a widebody, 2-door, Impreza called the 22B STi. The 22B had the EJ22 engine as opposed to the regular EJ20 engine. This means the displacement was increased from 1994 cc to 2212cc. The block was a closed-deck borrowed from the Legacy's EJ22. The heads (valves, valvetrain and such) were lifted from the STi Version 4 engine. It produce 280 PS (206 kW) and 363 N·m (37.0 kgf·m) of torque at a lower engine speed of 3200 rpm. The redline was lowered from 8000 rpm to 7000 rpm.

The 22B was used to commemorate the 3rd consecutive manufacturer's title for Subaru in the FIA World Rally Championship. This car was given a unique color of blue and had fender flared widebody taken from the Peter Stevens designed WRC car. It sported a Bilstein suspension, a triple-plate clutch, cryo-treated gears, a unique spoiler, a unique bumper and custom BBS gold wheels.

The origin of the name 22B has often been debated. Many assume 22 referred to the 2.2 liter displacement and the B was for the Bilstein suspension. This would correlate with the idea that Subaru sells a Legacy Spec B, where the B represents the Bilstein suspension. Others believe that 22B was meant to represent the much recognized 555 decal on the WRC car as 22B is a hexadecimal representation of the decimal number, 555.

It is interesting to note that the 22B STi that is suppose to be #13 was never given the plaque. Subaru of America imported #13 to be used as a press car.

S201 STi (2000): Subaru Tecnica International started the S-series of special Imprezas. This series is a limited production series that sports an engine output of greater than 280 PS (206 kW) (special variant cars were excluded from the gentlemen's agreement). The car was decked with nearly every single part from the STi catalogue.

The S201 was a 4-door STi that sported the only body-kitted S-series WRX STi. It had a tri-planar wing and a massive front airsplitter. The entire suspension was composed of STi parts.

Worldwide[]

The STI was originally sold only in Japan. It was later made officially available in Oceania (Australia had it in 1999 with the STi Version V). In 2001, Europe received the STi with the change of the chassis. After seeing the Impreza WRX sell at much better levels than expected, Subaru began selling the STI in North America in 2004.

It should be noted that the Oceania and Europe actually had WRX STis in the region before the official versions. Car importation laws in those areas are much more lax than America's laws. Thus, the grey markets has many earlier versions of the WRX STi. America's car importation laws are much more strict. In most cases, the only way to legally import an earlier version of the WRX STi than the one offered is by registering it as a race or exhibition car.

Design quirks and oddities[]

According to the Herald Sun, a 1999 Impreza STi 2 door is considered a modern collectable. The car, costed $80,000 AUD when brand new can be had at around $19,600-$22,600 AUD.

Motorsports[]

Rally

FIA PCWRC: The STi serve as the basis from which Group N "production" rally cars are constructed. Group N4-classed (marketed by FIA as Production Car World Rally Championship or PCWRC) cars are the major support category for the World Rally Championship and are the premier category in many national rally championships. For the past two years (2004 and 2005), the WRX STi has taken the top 3 podiums in Group N. This new effort can be attributed to STi's increased support in Group N motorsports.

FIA WRC: In 1995, 1996 and 1997 World Rally Championships, Subaru's World Rally Team, in conjunction with Prodrive won the WRC manufacturer's title with the World Rally Impreza. The STi's bare chassis is used by Prodrive as the basis of the World Rally Impreza. This WRC class is currently labeled by FIA as Group A8. Colin McRaein 1995, Richar Burns in 2001, and Petter Solberg in 2003 all won the WRC driver's title with the World Rally Impreza.


Autocrossing

JAF Events: In 2004, the STi Spec C won 1st place in the All Japan gymkhana (Japanese autocrossing) championships.

SCCA Events: At the 2005 Tire Rack SCCA Solo Nationals in Topeka, Kansas, a 2004 US-spec STi took 1st in the STU and ESP classes.


Road racing

FIA Events: In 2005, Prova Racing took a STI to 2nd place in class and 14th overall in the 24 hour Nurburgring race.

JAF Events: In 2005, Prova Racing's STis finished the season in 1st and 3rd place in Japan's Super Taikyu. In 2002, Eifel Prova Racing took 1st place in Super Taikyu.

SCCA Events: In Club Racing's T2 division, Icy Racing's 2004 STis took 1st and 2nd place. In 2005, ESX Motorsports announed the introduction of the WRX STI in World Challege's GT class.

Manga:

The STi is featured in various movies and anime. In Shuichi Shigeno's manga turned anime, Initial D, the main character's father, Bunta, drives a WRX Type R STi Version V with a STi Sports Bumper (a bumper that was sold in the STi parts catalogue; it had the same shape as the 22B STi but was made to fit the non-wide body Imprezas).


Anime:

In the anime, Ex-Driver, a '99 Impreza WRC was shown in the first episode. Unfortunately, it was totaled in the episode (the power line for the car's 6-speed sequential transmission was damaged by a runaway AI car, making gear changes impossible).

Movies:

In the Hong Kong movie, "Legend of Speed 2", two street racing teams compete in the streets of Kowloon, Hong Kong. One of the teams races WRX STis. The leader drives a white WRX STi version 3.

Games:

This car is also featured in the Gran Turismo game series for the PS2. Forza Motorsports for the Xbox has also included various WRX STis in the car line-up. The cars were featured in several rally games, that are WRC Impreza, such as Colin McRae Rally. They even featured in several import games, the GDB Impreza, such as SRS, and Need for Speed: Underground, the 22B STi GC8 was featured in the THQ import street racing game Juiced. They also featured in several Japanese imported racing games such as Kaido Battle and Initial D: Special Stage. The WRX Type R Sti version 5 that Bunta drives in Initial D, is a special car that be gained with a sequential imput on the Initial D Arcade game.

TV:

A 2004-2005 STi is also featured in a Taco Bell commercial.In the Quaker State oil ad, they feature a stock WRX STi on the commercial and on magazines.
