The Ferrari 512 F1 debuted in 1964 driven by Lorenzo Bandini, a Formula Junior World Champion. This Formula One car had a flat-12 (12 horizontally opposed cylinders) engine, Ferrari chose to use this engine because, at least in theory it was lower the a V-12. The 512 was still overrun by Lotus and BRM, despite its incredible design. With losses and new rules in mind going into the 1966 season Ferrari designed its next car, the Ferrari 312 F1-66.
