Datsun was the name Nissan used before it became Nissan.
Before the Datsun brand name came into being, an automobile named the DAT car was built in 1914, by the Kaishinsha Motorcar Works, in the Azabu-Hiroo District in Tokyo. The new car's name was an acronym of the company's partners' surnames:
- Kenjiro Den
- Rokuro Aoyama
- Meitaro Takeuchi.
Nissan was the parent company of Datsun, and in the late 1970s on some models, Datsun started using the Nissan name on the car to eventually phase the name in once it was decided that the Datsun name would be dropped. The newly introduced 1982 Nissan Sentra (replacing the outgoing 210 model) was the first Nissan model that would actually be known primarily as a Nissan instead of a Datsun, even though it still sported a small Datsun badge.

2014 return
In March 2012 Nissan announced the return of the Datsun brand for 2014 as a low-cost brand to be sold in countries like Russia, Indonesia and India, it's first model is expected to be based in Lada Granta.
