In model year 2004, the Daimler-Chrysler corporation introduced the Chrysler Crossfire. With its art-deco styling, and a Mercedes 3.2 ltr. V6 along with many of the underpinnings of the Mercedes SLK series, it was beautifully designed and well appointed. However, many felt that this model lacked the power to go with its exotic exterior.

To remedy this, in the 2005 model year, Chrysler introduced the Crossfire SRT-6. With a supercharged AMG built version of the 3.2 litre. taken from the Mercedes SLK32 AMG, a stiffer suspension and Mercedes leading manumatic 5 speed transmission, a true beast was born. Producing a stated 330HP and 310ft/lbs. of torque, this car has the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 5 seconds, and will stop from 100 mph in about 115 feet. 0 to 100 and back to 0 is reportedly completed in 15 seconds. Scoring high on the skid pad and slalom course, this car is a serious contender and will provide all the excitement and experience of much more expensive cars.

Produced as both a coupe and a roadster, the Crossfire SRT-6 comes only with a 3/36 bumper to bumper warranty, but an extended warranty is available and is recommended due to the cost of replacement parts.

Styles and Major Options[]

There were three trim levels available during the few years the Crossfire was produced: Base, Limited, and SRT-6. Along with trim levels, there were two basic models: the Coupe, and the Roadster. Both models were available in all the trim levels, but not all trim levels were available during each year of production.

The Base trim level lacked some of the exterior details of the Limited and SRT-6, such as silver accents on the front grill, door handles, and fender strakes. The Base and Limited included an automatically deploying/retracting rear wing. The SRT-6 had a fixed rear wing.

In 2005 the Base and Limited were available in Black, Aero Blue Pearl Coat, Alabaster, Black, Blaze Red Crystal Pearl Coat, Graphite Metallic, and Sapphire Silver Blue Metallic. The Roadster was available in all of those colors and Classic Yellow.

In 2005, Chrysler released the SRT-6, which featured an advertised 330 horsepower and 310 ft-lbs of torque. Those performance numbers were later found to be false. It is believed that Daimler-Chrysler did not want the performance of the Crossfire to appear to be equivalent of the 2004 Mercedes SLK32 AMG, which sports the same motor, especially when the Mercedes cost several thousand dollars more. The specs for the SRT-6 were found to match the 2004 SLK32 AMG at 349 hp and 332 ft-lbs of torque. That power was delivered by an AMG hand-tuned, supercharged version of the standard 3.2 liter V6. The SRT-6 also featured a stiffened suspension, a fixed rear wing, and designer alloy wheels. Other small details differentiated the SRT-6 from the other trim levels, such as SRT badges and SRT logo embroidered seats. The SRT-6 was mainly produced in 2005, with approximately 3000 of them coming off Karmann's production line in Osnabrueck Germany. A very limited number of SRT-6's were sold as 2006 models. Only twelve 2006 SRT-6's are believed to exist, but that number is unconfirmed. It is believed that these were special production cars some with specialty paint, and were not intended to be sold. Some of the 2006 SRT's are known to be Chrysler company cars used for testing, promotions, reviews, and marketing purposes. One is known to have been in Auburn Hills, MI for marketing use - taken to shows, driven by magazine columnists, etc. The 2005 SRT-6's were available in Aero Blue Pearl Coat, Black, Graphite Metallic, and Sapphire Silver Blue.

There were only three options available on the SRT-6: color, tires and nav system. A buyer could chose between high performance (summer) tires and all season radials. Also they had a choice of standard audio system, or the audio system with built-in GPS navigation. The navigation system was a let down to many users, as it required you to insert navigation DVD's into the stereo, leaving you unable to listen to music discs while getting navigational assistance. Also the navigation system did not have a graphical display, just audio "turn here" style directions.

Design quirks and oddities[]

One oddity is that the Crossfire's steering column has no tilt adjustment -- something many of the most inexpensive cars today have. Yet it has telescoping steering, which is relatively rare today.

The biggest quirk to the Crossfire is the cup holder. Most owners agree that it's not a big deal, but also agree that the factory cup holder is useless. It is also one of the most over-engineered cup holders around. The car's Mercedes heritage shines through in this area, as they have some very odd cup holders in their line. The cup holder is a regular joke among Crossfire owners.

Another quirky aspect of the car is the way that the hood can be locked in a straight up and down position. This is a boon to mechanics, but always attracts attention at car shows and meets because it looks so odd.
