The BMW 4 Series (F32) is a compact executive coupé manufactured by the German automaker BMW. First official details of the 4 Concept 4 Series were released to the public by an official press release on 5 December 2012, detailing the intention to replace the current 3 Series coupé with a new 4 series line to further differentiate the more sporty coupé.

The BMW 4 Series is also available in a retractable hard-top convertible form (F33) and in the Gran Coupe body style (F36) since the 2014 model year.

The 4 Series Coupe shares all technical features with F30 3 Series. The interior is almost the same as in the 3 Series except for the 2+2 seating configuration, and the exterior also shares the overall styling of the 3 Series. Its wheelbase is 110.6 inches, two inches longer than the 3 Series coupe and identical to the 3-series sedan. BMW has increased the front track by 1.8 inches, for 60.8 inches, and 3.1 inches to the rear, for 62.7. Its overall width is 71.9 inches, 1.7 inches wider than the 3 Coupe, and 0.6 inches lower, at 53.6. Overall length is 182.7 inches. The BMW 4 Series has made its debut in Detroit, United States at the North American International Auto Show in January 2013.

First generation (F32/F33/F36; 2013)[]

The first generation of the BMW 4 Series consists of the BMW F32 (coupé version), BMW F33 (convertible version) and BMW F36 (five-door liftback version, marketed as 'Gran Coupé') compact executive cars. The F32/F33/F36 has been produced from 2014 to 2020 and is often collectively referred to as the F32.

Development and launch[]

Official details of the "Concept 4 Series" were released in December 2012, detailing the intention to replace the E92 3 Series coupé with a new 4 Series line. In 2013, the concept vehicle (called the Concept 4 Series Coupé) was unveiled at the North American International Auto Show. The concept car was designed by Won Kyu Kang.

Compared with its E92 predecessor, the F32's wheelbase is 50 mm (2.0 in) longer, the overall length is increased by 31 mm (1.2 in) and the width is increased by 44 mm (1.7 in). The front track width is 1,545 mm (60.8 in) and the rear track width is 1,593 mm (62.7 in), increases of 45 mm (1.8 in) and 80 mm (3.1 in) respectively.

Body styles[]

Coupé (F32)[]

The coupé models were unveiled in September 2013 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Nicolas Huet was the lead designer of the F32 coupe.

The launch models consisted of the petrol 428i and 435i, and the diesel 420d. In the remainder of 2013, the following models were added: 420i, 420d, 425d, 430d and 435d. In 2014, the 418d model was added. Most models were available with all-wheel drive ("xDrive").

Convertible (F33)[]

The convertible body style was unveiled at the 2013 Tokyo Motor Show, followed by the 2013 LA Auto Show.

Its international launch was in Las Vegas in January 2014. The launch models were the petrol-engined 428i and 435i, and the diesel 420d. All-wheel drive (xDrive) became available a few months after the launch.

Like its predecessor, the F33 has a three-part retractable hardtop. It includes noise-absorbing headliner and air curtains. A wind deflector and neck warmers were available as options.

Gran Coupé (F36)[]

The 4 Series Gran Coupé was unveiled at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, followed by 2014 New York International Auto Show and the 13th Beijing International Automotive Exhibition in 2014. Production of the Gran Coupé began in the Dingolfing plant in July 2014.

As per the larger 6 Series Gran Coupé (F06), the F36 has coupé styling with a fastback rear. However, the F36 also includes a C-pillar located behind the rear doors. Compared with the F30 sedan, the F36 has 13 mm (0.5 in) less rear headroom and the same cargo volume. With the rear seats folded down, the F36 has a cargo volume of 1,300 L (45.9 cu ft).

The launch models were the petrol-engined 420i, 428i and 435i, and the diesel 418d and 420d.[32][33] The 435i Gran Coupé is approximately 91 kg (200 lb) heavier than the equivalent F30 335i sedan.

2017 facelift[]

The facelift (LCI) changes were unveiled on 16 January 2017, with the first pictures of the refreshed Coupé (F32 LCI) shown in the new color Snapper Rocks Blue (turquoise blue), and the Convertible (F33 LCI) shown in the also new, Sunset Orange colour (bright orange). The Gran Coupé (F36 LCI) model was shown in a silver colour. Major changes include:

  • Exterior design changes including redesigned LED headlights, tail-lights, and bumpers
  • Interior design changes including an updated iDrive system (version 6.0)
  • Revised stiffer suspension on Coupé and Gran Coupé models
  • New additional trim, wheel, and exterior colour options

Second generation (G22/G23/G26; 2020)[]

The second generation of the BMW 4 Series consists of the BMW G22 (coupé version) along with the BMW G23 (convertible version) and BMW G26 (saloon version, marketed as the Gran Coupé) compact executive cars. The G22 4 Series was launched in June 2020 and succeeds the F32 4 Series.

Development[]

The G22 4 Series was unveiled in concept form as the BMW Concept 4, at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show and previewing the next generation of the 4 Series. The most notable design feature is the large vertical kidney grille which is inspired by the BMW 328 and 3.0 CSi respectively. The grille has a 3D pattern design to give it a more pronounced look. Other notable design features of the concept were a pronounced duck-tail spoiler at the rear, thin wing mirrors made from a single piece of aluminium and open headlamps, which have no covering over their 3D lighting elements and are instead embedded into the body of the car.

Launch[]

On 26 May 2020, BMW announced that the G22 4 Series would be unveiled online in June 2020 by posting a teaser image of the range-topping M440i model. More than 80% of the design cues from the Concept 4 were carried over to the production version including the large kidney grille which now has mesh inserts and is flanked with two slim LED headlamps and two large air intakes (exclusive for the M440i). The rear features wrap around tail lamps and a lip spoiler which is exclusive for the M Sport models. The silhouette of the car is similar to the 8 Series with a tapering roof line. The rear bumper comes with a diffuser on the M Sport models with the M440i having dual exhaust tips. The production version is claimed to have a drag area as low as 0.25 x 2.19 m2 for the Coupé. On the online unveiling, BMW announced that the worldwide launch of the G22 4 Series would be held in October of the same year.

At the end of September, BMW unveiled the convertible version of the new 4 Series (G23), with the same technology and engines as the coupe. It has a canvas roof, unlike the two predecessors which had a retractable hardtop.

Models[]

The launch models consist of the diesel engine 420d, 430d and M440d, the petrol engine 420i M Sport and 430i and the mild hybrid M440i xDrive.[9] The 420i M Sport and 430i feature the 2.0-litre BMW B48 inline-4 engine; rated at 135 kW (181 hp) and 300 N⋅m (221 lb⋅ft) of torque for the 420i M Sport, and 190 kW (255 hp) and 399 N⋅m (294 lb⋅ft) of torque for the 430i. The M440i model is powered by the 3.0-litre turbocharged BMW B58 Inline-6 engine rated at 285 kW (382 hp) and 500 N⋅m (369 lb⋅ft) of torque equipped with a 48-volt electric motor rated at 8 kW (11 hp). The 420d is powered by the 2.0-litre turbo-diesel BMW B47 Inline-4 engine rated at 138 kW (185 hp) while the 430d and M440d are equipped with the 3.0-litre turbo-diesel BMW B57 Inline-6 engine rated at 207 kW (278 hp) for the 430d and 246 kW (330 hp) for the 440d. The M440d, like the M440i, is also equipped with a mild hybrid system. The hybrid system features a belt-fed starter generator to recoup energy under braking. This power can be supplied to the car’s 12V electrical system or deployed to assist the combustion engine to help reduce CO2 emissions and boost fuel economy.

The only available gearbox is an 8-speed automatic transmission. The M Sport models come with a modified gearbox which features faster shifts and a new "Sprint" driving mode. The 430i, 420d, 430d and M440d come standard with rear-wheel-drive but can be configured with all-wheel-drive. The M440i comes with all wheel drive only. The G22 4 series has a wider track than its predecessor and has 50/50 weight distribution.
